I've been a 270 Win. fan for 28 years. I like it because it's an extremely accurate cartridge that shoots flat, has mild recoil, puts medium game down very quickly, plus you can get full velocity even out of a handy 22" barrel. As part of a three-rifle battery, the 270 is very tough to beat on the light end.

Now, if you were talking about a two-rifle battery, I'd forget the 270 and move up to a 300 Win. Mag.

.300 H&H followed by .30-06 if it were me having to decide in that catagory. Not that the .375 won't do everything either does, while still being able to work on bigger.

If I set up a 3 rifle battery, it would go something like .22LR or .22 Hornet for a light pot rifle. .375 H&H for a plains rifle. .450 class or even better .500-.577 double for in close with the big ones.

Just my take on it.

500 is a nice round number, either followed by "Nitro Express" or by "cubic inch displacement".

It seems I'm alway's wishing I brought a .243 Win... So I think a .243 Win, a .375 H&H, and a .458 Lott or as mentioned 450 caliber.. But I alway's out of habit instead of a 243 I bring my 06 as a light rifle.. But have found I now only bring a .375 and .458 Lott.. Come to think of it tho, last hunt, my wife with her little Mannlicher Schoenaur carbine (jeez,I can never spell that right) in 7X57 was very very impresive indeed, so I think in retrospect I would drop the 243 and go with the 7X57 as a light rifle..

bulldog563,
Your .500 will do for the big nasties that want to stomp you into a pile of jelly. I think the .375 is the perfect all around rifle. I used mine for deer and antelope hunting here in Wyoming. It doesn't tear up as much meat as my .300 did. So I would say go with the .375 as your medium rifle. It will certainly work for buff. For the small bore I would go for the .243. It works great for critters in the 100-300 lb range. A .243 has very light recoil and they are flat fun to shoot. I have a friend who uses his for elk and they are one shot kills.

I'm going to get out and take a peek at my new 8x60r BLE which just arrived in the state this week.

Funny, for me with this thirty caliber BLE, my Tolley in 500/450 3-1/2" Magnum BPE, and my sixteen bore (.666 bullet Dia.) pinfire double rifles, all ends of the bore size spectrun from small bore to big bore are all essentially set up for hunting game the size of what we find here in North America.
Not a DGR in the pile.

There's a lot of game in Africa that are really not large at all. You already have a .375 and that will handle the larger plains game well.

For animals under the size of Gemsbok and I'm talking the Impala size and there's a lot of species that are that size one could consider the 7MM Mauser, 280 Rem, .270 Win or even the 6.5 X 55 or 6.5 X 57 as the light rifle.

Personally if it were me I'd use the 500 Searcy for the "stomp your ass" game and get a 338 mag as the second rifle and the 6.5 X 55 for the light rifle.

I suggest a good bolt action rifle like the BRNO ZKK 1990 m600 in 7x57 Mauser. This one would handle all of thelighter game species easily and quite handily do for the larger species of plains game if need be.
: Mine shoots very closey together with 120gr. Noslers BT's at 3,100fps through 140 Bondeds at 2,900fps to 160's Triple shocks at 2,680fps. - all within 2" at 100yards.

I agree with the mauser in 7 x 57 also.Embodies the characteristics of a good light rifle.

You guys can have your 7 x 57 rifles, I'd rather have a .275 Rigby, original of course!

Quite honestly, I think the 6.5 x 55 loaded with the the 140gr spitzer is seriously under-rated and would be the best compromise all-round small-bore for that application, as vapodog suggests. Personally though I am a self-confessed victim of nostalgia, and would willingly handicap myself with the 6.5 x 54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer! I'm just a sucker for those lovely little carbines which chamber that round!

In my own personal hunting and shooting ethos, there are far more important things than ballistics!

My current battery is'nt maybe the perfect one but I do get by with it.I have a .243 .308 .303 .460 and a 12g shotgun.Basically I hunt exclusively with my .243. I have shot basically everything from Steenbok to Eland with it and it served me well for 20years now.Taking in consideration that your bullet placement is up to scratch and you use good quality ammo then there is no plains game that you cannot hunt with a .243.ALso keep in mind that any rifle has its limitations and you wont try an eland or a gemsbok on the shoulder with a 243 at 300yds.That is just plain stupid but you can shoot springbok or blesbok at 400yds on the shoulders with good results.Last year my wife shot a blackwildebeest at about 150m with my .243 and it was flat on it back instantly.I had the 308 with me as well but she felt more cumfortable with the 243.My vote goes to a 243 because it is good enough for small to medium sized game. The rest you can blow up with the big guns.
