Re-finishing a sidelock double
      #47678 - 24/01/06 05:33 AM

What are you guys thoughts on re-finishing a double. I have a sidelock double .500 NE made in 1980 by Marcel Thys. The origional owner apparently kept the stock soaked in oil, as the checkering is filled and the stock has that dark mottled look of long years of too much oil. I have had the rifle for about 6 years and I have always wanted to have the stock re-finished and allow the beautiful piece of wood to be seen. As this is not a pre-war rifle built by one of the "prestigious english firms" I do not suspect that having some re-finish work done to it will affect the resale, not that I will ever part with it mind you!!
If I did have some work done I would have JJ Perdeau at Champlins to do the work as he was Marcels US repair man.
Some oppinions please??

Oil soaked stocked are reasonably easy to get "clean".

I believe Petrol gets it out but I leave it to the experts.

As long as the wood hasn't rotted, it should be fine
once dry.

Good luck.

That is a FINE gun you have, and it sounds like it "needs" some attention, and if left unrepaired/uncleaned, it will eventually require more work to rectify the situation if neglected.

These guns are like high-end race cars, they require attention and regular maintenance to perform thier best.... nothing wrong with refinishing and I would have JJ do it for the sake of the gun's provenience.

It's not a famed winchester or beloved colt... so put those BS "refinish" connotations out of your mind and give the gal the attention she deserves. That BS is for collectors that collect guns for "original" condition (which I don't get)... real guns were meant to be maintained and that includes the occasional stock refinish and reblack.

You need to get the stock de-oiled to prevent wood loss. Soaking in acetone seems to be the most common method. J. J. is the obvious choice for work on a Thys in the US.

Our stock maker here in West Aussie has a vacume chamber he uses to remove over oiled stocks.
Dont ask me how it works,I dont know but it sure does work.
So my advise to you is to get a professional to do the job !!
