I am posting this for 500Nitro. I thought I would start a New Lancaster Thread

The Photos being posted are of a Lancaster Sidelock Ejector 450 / 400 3 1/4",
Serial No 13141. It is a "Wrist Breaker" action.
Proofed 60gn Cordite, 400gn Bullet.

Address on barrel 99 Mount St, Berkeley Sqaure, London
26” / 66cm Barrels

Lever locked fore end with Full engraving
Full Length File Cut Rib
1 Standing & 1 Folding leaf sights, Ramp Mounted Bead Foresight
14 1/2” / 37cm, Old English Red Rubber Recoil Pad

The gun was not cased when I got it so I cased it and then my mate
in the US took a liking to it and wanted it so badly I relented.

He took the rifle to Africa in 2004 and shot a Lion, Buffalo and
Elephant in 3 Hours.

Enjoy.

How can anybody want a new rifle when rifles like this are obtainable?

Mickey,

It is one of the few double rifles that I probably regret selling
but since it went to someone I knew who would appreciate it
and that I have first option on it if he decides to sell, then I
don't mind too much.

It was superb to hold, look at, feel and it ooooooozed build quality
from end to end.

Re the case - that's why I put so much effort into the case.
It made it even better than it was by itself.

Brings back good memories.

Mickey - New DR's have a place but NO sub $20k DR of modern
manufacture comes close to this one - and others English DR's I've seen
or owned - W&C Scott comes to mind.

That's why I object to people comparing a Merkel, Searcy, Chapuis et al
to an old English DR.

500 Nitro:

Lovely rifle with nice extras. Were you ever able to get any information on it from the Lancaster records?

Yes I did, that's why I posted about a guy in Australia having the records
as that's who I was told to contact - I also had the corresponding gun in 12 Gauge
- Lancaster Sidelock Self Opener "Wrist Breaker".

I passed whatever knowledge I had on with the gun and I am afraid.
I didn't keep a copy.

Re the Extra's, when I case a gun I tend to go the whole way and make sure
all the bits and pieces are correct and Period for the gun - even if newly manufactured.
I just think if you are gong to do something you do it as best you can and don't
cut corners - the same as making sure all of your guns are in full working order
and getting them fixed.

The gun shot really well - and the mate in the US who bought it got it shooting
just as well with the components he had access to over there. I think the result
from his trip to Africa say it all.

Mickey just posted the photos for me.

I had quite a few 450/400's and didn't need them
all and that was the one he liked the most.

It was more a case of Jim, the new owner was someone
who appreciated a good gun and I know would look after it
- after all, if I ever get it back I want it back in a similar condition.

Like 500Nitro said, I just posted the pictures. However no begging works with me, unless you're a little Black and White dog.

I understand your desire to give a rifle to someone that is Known.. I would think Jim and I have a lot in common.. I've never used a rifle as a boat paddle.. I've never clubed with the stock of my rifle any animals... And i've never spent that much cash on the type of rifles in question..
I wish i could see your collection and hear your stories of such..
Thanks for all your postings to my questions..

I can be prety choosy with who I sell my rifles to.
One thing that got me was that he was going to go to
Africa with it so it would be used - not stuck in a gun
room just being looked at. I liked that as I use my guns
for hunting - we are lucky here in that you can take some
really good guns out (ie Holland Royals level) without
them getting damaged too much.

I have never seen many Lancaster Sidelocks of that type
for sale - pity, they are nice guns.
A lot of people don't like them due to the reputation
of the Sidelock Shotgun - hence why it is called a
"Wrist Breaker" - however that DR was not that hard
to close and I did compare it to a Self Opening Purdey
and their was no major difference.

On the other hand, whe asked
"isn't it hard to close"
the English Gentleman said
"I don't close my own guns, that's the loaders job" ?

Re buying guns - just save all the little bits and pieces and it soon
builds up - some people buy cars, boats, Holiday houses, some
of us buy guns !!!

Enjoy

Hey, that's my rifle. I was doing a search on Lancaster & this thread came up.
I even had to grab my wife to show her my picture on the internet. Now she thinks I'm famous!
I bought this Lancaster from 500Nitro & it is even more beautiful than the pictures show.
It is quite accurate & a great caliber. I have another safari booked for this
summer (Aug,2006) in Zim to go after buff, lion & elephant. Hopefully it
performs as well on this trip. 500Nitro is a great guy to deal with & has a wealth
of knowledge about double rifles. I've been reading his posts over the last two
years & didn't realize it was my friend Nigel. Cheers Mate!

cowboy,

Good to hear from you. I made it to the US (Las V)
but you better keep that Buffalo fed and watered for
another year.

Anyway, how is the old girl ? Good to see that she will
get another trip this year.

Will call you.
