Ruger Red Label Question
      #47060 - 20/01/06 01:59 AM

Does anyone have expierence with the Ruger Red Labels. I am kind of in a quandry. I want to buy one for my grandson who is turning twelve this year and I'm trying to decide on a guage and model and they seem to be reasonably priced and a quality gun.

He is left handed so I don't want to mess around with left handed auto's and pumps so I have settled on a O/U.

I am trying to decide first on a gage. If I went with a 12 gage I could buy inserts and shoot 20 gage loads, and then he would be able to grow into the gun and shoot the 12 after a bit, or just buy him the 20 to begin with because it would be lighter for him to start out with, but be limited for geese/ducks/turkey later on.

I was looking also at their camo model, but that comes in at 8 lbs, why is that, does anyone no, perhaps because it's tauted as as turkey gun perhaps.

Any advise sure would be appreciated

The Red Label is a nice gun. The wood on them usually isn't of the greatest quality but they are very serviceable. I have 2 and they have never given me any problems in the least. As far as gauge that is as much personal preference as anything else. The 12 will generally give you more versatility in available loads. However a 20 isn't much of a hinderance in the hands of someone who can shoot. I hunt a lot of duck and one of the gents always uses a 20 and he kills just as many birds as we do, more importantly he doesn't wound and more birds than us either. That said I'd prefer the 12 and I wouldn't worry about inserts, if he is doing the shooting in the field he isn't likely to notice the difference in recoil between a 12 and 20 anyway.

BB

P.S.- For god's sake get him wood and bluing forget the camo.

I recommend the 20 ga first of all. Like me, he will never need more and it handles better.

Now, Ruger Red Label. Some get many thousands of rounds problem free from them. Others have hideous experiences like problem triggers, loose lock up, loose forearms, and problems returning the guns to Ruger. This is the part that doesn't match up with other Ruger guns as they are generally very good with customer service. I think it is a QA problem with this gun. Maybe even design. I would pass on the Ruger and get a used Miroku or SKB which will run around $700.

The 20 g has a nice feel in the red labels. They handle better than the 12's IMO.
I don't know much about the more recent red label rugers but the early ones have worked well for me.
The early ones are quite well put together for a mass produced gun.
The very first models had a blued action frame and looked nicer than the stainless later models IMO.

8X,

I don't like the idea of giving a young hunter something that has a second shot left from the same trigger. Too many new shooters will pop a bird with the first shot, then get excited and forget to put the safety back on.

I saw a dad have his left ear shot off by his son just this way when I was about 9-10 years old. When I moved up from my Savage 220 single shot HAMMERLESS 20ga to a double, my dad made sure it was a double trigger double. While not completely the solution to the accidental second shot, it mitigates the chances somewhat.

You might consider a good quality DT SXS 20ga or a used Valmet made older Savage o/u with DT.

Regards,
L2S

I would go with the 20. I have not heard anything but good reports about the Red Label but some of the comments so far definitely would suggest that you should give it a good inspection prior to buying if that is what you decide.
