Double Muzzleloader vs Nitro Double issues
      #46996 - 19/01/06 11:37 AM

How simular are the issues between double muzzleloaders, double BP cartridges, and double cartridge smokeless? Sometimes I'm not sure I should post my double muzzleloader issues on the double forum or the muzzleloader or both or what. In the double forum most of the fellers' are smokeless cartridge shooters (which I also shoot). However, the double muzzleloader shares issues in both all worlds, BP, muzzleloading and two barrels! I guess I'm wondering, should there be a double muzzleloader index/forum only? Were is the best place to post questions/comments in regards to this? I don't know.... Or are they alike enough that I shouldn't worry?

Hello-

I too have at times wondered just where I should post questions about the use and care of my black powder pinfire cartridge 16bore double rifles.

The way I tend to shake it down is like this...
If I'm fiddling with things in order to get one of the SxS bore rifles to shoot right, in respect to regulation that is, I post the questions, issues, or comments on the double rifle list.
If I'm in some kind of spot as to what to do with overall cartridge performance or something to the sort of ballistics, I post to the big bore rifles list.
If there's some hoodoo voodoo vixen devil hex regarding black powder, it's ignition, or it's care in respect to loading with it, I post to the blackpowder and muzzleloaders list.

Or something like that...

Good thinking Tinker, but no-one's going to smack colorado's hand for posting in both places. I dont mind reading about your difficulties/frustrations/failures with BP ( ) in more than one place!

Cheers!

I'm glad to see someone stepping out and giving us the chronicles of BP double-barreled muzzleloading Bore Rifle shooting and troubleshooting too.
Wherever it shows up!

Colorado, It see no reason you shouldn't post in both places.

For the info that only pertains to Black powder use, the black powder forum will give you the best information. Those are the people who know most about bullet molds, black powder, wading, and substitutes for black powder, and ignition systems. They know the little tricks that will keep the bores of your rifle shiney clean, and rust free, and your rifle shooting properly!

However, there are few muzzle loader shooters who have, even, a FAIR ubderstanding of double rifle problems. So in this forum is where you will get that information, from folks who know double rifles.

Then you have a third group of shooters who only shoot black powder cartridge double rifles, and that is a unique set of folks that are up on things that neither of the other two are up on.

That is the thing that is good about web-sites like this one, and Accurate Reloading. One is not locked into a Rem-chester deer rifle, mentality, as you will find in places like some web-sites like those headed up by TV deer hunting film stars.

As long as your questions are legitamate, they will be tendered here,in a serious way, and with a real effort to help!

Post away! We'll do our level best to help where posible!

Hey a Double Rifle is a Double Rifle. Muzzleloader, BP Cartridge or Nitro. The problems are the same just the propellant is different.

I have been wondering how critical regulation is in a front stuffer. Are they regulated for a particular load and bullet or just stuck together and Good Luck?

Anybody have a nice old Holland, Westley or Greener?

Mickey - I think you will find that the 'modern' double barreled muzzleloaders are merely put together and Hail Mary if they shoot together. The barrels are generally aligned by lazer to converge at a given range, then brazed together - done deal. Some shoot well, others don't. This goes for .58's through newer 12bores I am sure. Some even had two sets of rear sights, one for each barrel, spaced in the middle rib, and adjustable for windage and elevation. I've a friend with a .58 that puts patched balls together at 100 yds with 120gr. 2F. Most others (I've seen 4) won't put them in the same county using one set of sights. My other buddy has to use both sights, one for each barrel. Luckily for him, the first shot is the furthest sight, so he folds it down for the second shot. The dispersion is crossed, diverging, and has elevation problems as well. Not only that, but the nipples stick way up in the air above the fences, showing improper breeching compared to ANY originals I've seen.
: Colorado's finally got a 12 that shoots well. His first, sent back, crossed with piddling target loads and got worse as the charges were increased.
