Problem with my Ruger No. 1H Tropical
      #46753 - 17/01/06 01:28 AM

A few weeks ago I bought a gently used 1H Tropical in .458 Lott. It seemed to be a good buy at $530US. It was stainless, which I prefer, as I am planning my second trip to Alaska, but I wasn't crazy about the laminate stock. I figured I could replace it with some nice walnut later.

After purchasing dies, bullets, brass, and an NECG peep sight, I went to sight the rifle in. After some frustration, I determined that the quarter rib on the rifle is crooked! I was unable to get a zero at 50 yards. With the NECG sight adjusted all the way to the right, it still hit 2" left.

I took it back to the store and they agreed to either send it to Ruger for repair at their expense, or credit me the purchase price on a different gun. They didn't have any other used big bores in stock, but they will order me new whatever I want. I'm on a fairly tight budget, as I am in law school.

What can I expect from Ruger? Obviously my cheapest option is to just let them fix it, but I am concerned that the repair won't be satisfactory. I think to fix it right, the rifle will have to be rebarreled. I am not sure I can swing the cost of paying the difference for a new #1 or maybe a CZ 550.

I welcome and comments and advice.

Thanks.

Give Ruger a chance to make it right...and I suspect they will. I sent them a No.1A that I'd bought used, and could not get it to shoot consistently. They re-barelled and re-blued the entire rifle, and replaced the forearm at no charge! This despite my offering to pay for the work when I sent it in.

I'm with akjeff on this one, let it go back to Ruger and at least give them the opportunity to make it right. Most times a major manufacturer always makes it right.

This must be a common problem for Ruger. I had a #1 .416 Rigby with a similar issue. I wanted a custom quarter rib so that I could keep the scope's ocular ahead of the falling block. The quarter rib was completed and inletted for QD Talley's, and when the smith unscrewed the factory quarter rib he discovered it had some "preload" on the screws. My situation was not so bad as yours however, in that I was able to zero the windage of the factory sight.

I spoke to Ruger yesterday and they advised me the rifle had been repaired and was out to be test fired. I wasn't able to get much detail. They were able to tell me the barrell, lever, and foreend had been "repaired", but that wan't terribly helpful.

I guess I will find out soon.
