      #46576 - 14/01/06 06:58 AM

I had the plesure of handeling a Woodward Double rifle made on "The automatic" action. It is one of the most beautifull guns I aver seen. The shapes of the stock and ecpially the action looked fantastic. Does anyone know anything obout this automatic system. And isthere meny made??

Morten,

I too find the James Woodward "The Automatic" to be elegant. Very few were made as rifles. I am fortunate enough to have one in .450/400 NE which remains in pristine condition, in its original case. Here are some photographs of my rifle. If your connection is slow, be patient for the pictures to load.

Woodward "The Automatic"

Earlier this week I happened to notice that Cabelas has a James Woodward "The Automatic" shotgun in 12 gauge, of the same design as my rifle. Here is a link to this interesting gun.

Woodward 12 bore

I would like to hear more details about the Woodward rifle you handled.

Regards,
Curl

That is a very beautiful rifle you have there! How does she shoot?

Great photos, Curl. Really enjoyed the surf.

There is one here in Darwin in .303, we get to play with it occasionally. It turned up at the BGR Shoot last year, but I was too busy running the event to indulge! Grrr!

Morten,

Shouldn't Purdey be making the automatic and the second Woodward U/O these days since they own the name anyway? They have introduced their new hammerguns - I am sure that there would be many who would buy the shallow frame Woodward guns if they were made again...

Cpt Curl,

That is a fantastic rifle and you are a man of impeccable taste!

Good hunting, gentlemen!

A beautiful rifle. Do the cocking indicators protrude when cocked?

Morten,

I gave an explanation of how the action cocks on the webpage with my pictures. You must have overlooked it. I don't think I can explain any better than that.

The operating lever pushes against the cylindrical lugs that protrude inward from the sides of the tumblers.

What is the price on the rifle you are considering? I would think the rebore and re-chamber would have a negative effect on the value of that rifle.

Mickey,

The Woodward has what is often called "frog-eye" cocking indicators.

The axels of the tumblers protrude through the sideplates, but rather than being flush with the outside, like most modern sidelocks, they extend perhaps 1/8 inch beyond the outside surface, housed in a tubelike extension of the sideplate. They do not move laterally, if that is what you are asking. They simply indicate whether the lock is cocked by the radial position of the gold line across the end of the axel, just like a modern sidelock. Why they were made to protrude I don't know. I suspect the design was to give the axel of the tumbler more support.

Thanks to everybody for your kind compliments. I am very fond of my Woodward.

I have now had time to study your photos. This Is absolutly fabules. I also got an idea of how this gun works. It is qiute smple actually. but brilliant. This is in my eyes one of the most beautifull rifles ever made. The shapes and quality of the work was just outstanding. You must be very happy with this rifle.

If you don't mind my asking what are they asking for the rechambered gun?

CaptCurl,

That Woodward of yours is absolutely beautiful. At 8 1/2lbs it would make a wonderful buff or elephant rifle.

The other Woodward looks very nice too. The rebore and rechamber may hurt its value but not its beauty or its utility.

It was sold at an action and went for 8800£ hammer price.
