.470 Capstick
      #46003 - 07/01/06 06:55 PM

Does anyone have any experience with this cartridge? The fact that its based off the .375 case is a definate plus in terms of producing ammo relatively cheaply, but are there any issues to it that I am missing.

I wouldn't imagine headspacing would be a real problem with the belted case, but I would appreciate input one way or the other from someone who has had more experience with it. As far as performance on game, any remarks on its effectiveness would as be equally appreciated.

If you PM me your mailing address, I will burn a 470 capstick article onto CD and mail it to you.

I think the 470 capstic would be a fine round - if kept to ballistic equivilent of the 470NE. Problem is, everyone (including art alphin) wants to push it beyond the magic 2150fps mark.

Why??? What's the 470 at 2150 done so poorly in the past 99-years that warrants improvement with more velocity?

The slowest (and lowest pressure load) listed in Any Shot You Want is a 500gr bullet at 2283fps and at 49KPSI. I think lowering the velocity by 100fps would probably reduce the pressure by 5K and make it a worry-free round.

The fastest (and higest pressure load) listed in the same book is around 2400fps and 60KPSI.

IMO, I just don't see the need to push a 475 bullet beyond the tried and true 2150 mark. I think if you load one to those velocities, it is a cartridge with which you should have no problems.

Bullets are available and brass is easy to come by in it's cylindrical form.

I've got a Capstick built on a Rem700 action with Lothar 24" barrel. When built, it was deliberately made light at 4kg so that it could be carried all day. A mild load of 80gr AR2208 (Varget) behind the 500gr Woodleigh will get your attention. Rifle will be Magna-ported in the coming months to reduce recoil and muzzle flip and barrel length reduced to 22". Haven't chronographed it yet but I want 2100fps and no more. I see no reason to chase 2400fps in a light rifle.
I'm using CH/4D dies and I'm not ready to happily endorse them yet, resizing seems to be harder than it should and I still cant work out whether they crimp or not. I'm waiting on some Speer 400gr GoldDot projectiles to start working on reduced plinking loads at essentially 45/70 velocities.
Biggest hassle found so far is getting .475cal pilots for trimmers etc...
Cheers...

In regards to the 2400fps with 500gr bullet, it seems a little questionable to me as far as having a decent reasoning to its justification. There comes a point, from my understanding anyway, where velocity starts giving diminishing returns on its effect with larger bullets. Point being the .460 Weatherby vs. say one of the .450 Nitro Expresses. Seems to be for paper punching chronographing to develope velocity induced muzzle energy bragging rights or beyond sane shooting distances is all. It would be interesting for shoulder abuse and back readjustment theropy, but if I were to take it on game, I personally would want the bullet flying as close to the velocity as it was originally intended to be used at (.470NE levels of 2150fps in this case). At 2283fps and 49,000PSI, Any Shot's loading makes me wonder. Could you load it down anymore, or would you start encountering lower loading pressure spikes?

500grains, you have a pm as well. Thank you again.

Yes, you could load it down more. The loads for this round have the relatively small case crammed full of fast-burning powders to achieve these velocities. So there would be no worries about pressure spikes.

Pressure spikes would be a concern if you're reducing a slow-burning powder by a great deal in an already large-for-bore case.

That makes it a relative snap then. Just setup a chrono and start cutting back on powder charges until getting in the 2,150fps range. Would IMR4350 be too slow of a burning powder for use in the Capstick? It is my prefered powder in .30-06, and .375H&H, and if the Capstick can run happily with it a lowered velocity, it would make stocking powders as easy as can be for me if I were to entertain my thoughts with the round. (Just 4350 for rifles and 2400 for handguns.)

The 4350 series of powders are too slow for the Capstick and are not what I'd be wanting to use for a "reduced load" where you just start cutting back until you get your desired velocity. I'd be looking more towards the H4895 burning rate powders for that task.
Cheers...

I have hit 2350 fps with IMR4064 and no pressure problem.

500grains, I recieved the article. Excellent penmanship on top of being loaded with a wealth of knowledge. It looks as if my plans for the .425 Westley Richards will be post-poned. I've got to have one of these, and while the motivating factor originally was to consider it instead of the .425 due to feeding, after taking a look at those groups, my reasoning changed. I wasn't aware that it had a ghost shoulder on it, but now knowing that, I like it more.

Thank you again, and I will try to find something worth while to ship back as a token of my gratitude.
