How to Measure LOP?
      #45500 - 02/01/06 01:21 AM

How do you guys measure length of pull on yourself? I have been told that you measure LOP by the length from the bend of your trigger finger to the bend of your elbow. When I do this I get 16" to the first joint of my trigger finger when straight. If I bend my finger like I would when mounting a rifle it is 15". When Butch measured me he said my LOP was 14 3/4". From what I have read that is pretty long for someone who is 5'9". Whats the deal....Do I just have long arms for my height? Do you guys measure it in different ways? How about other measurements like drop at heel and cast off? When you guys have been measured in the past how is it most often done?

That is always the way I heard it was done - from the inside of the elbow to the first knuckle on your index finger.

Here is the measurement chart from Butch's site(bottom of form):

You measure your "ape index" by comparing your arm span to your height. The greater the length over 5'9", the higher your ape index

The Wulff double people have 48 measurements they take to find your LOP. The arm measurement you mentioned gets you in the ball park, but it is more complex than that.

It is not only your phyical dimensions but your shooting style that is important. Moreeover, as your shooting style progresses, your best LOP can change. It can change 1 1/2" even.

The best way (if you are satisfied with your shooting style) is to practice mounting guns of the same design as in which you are interested. If the gun catches on your clothing as it goes up to your shoulder, it is too long. If when shooting the gun, your nose attacks your thumb, it is too short. The problem is you must do this practice a lot but not all at once because you will subconsciously alter the mount.

If you will be using this gun is both cold and hot conditions, the thickness of your clothing might cause a problem. Some manufacturers make pads of varying thicknesses which snap into place so that you can alter the LOP to suit conditions or different shooters.

How does ape index relate to LOP?

48 measurements!!!!

How many of those are repeated inseam measurements? Have to be a little worried about just what length he was looking to pull

Could be the guy doing the measuring just liked you.....

The reason for so many variables is why there is a try stock. It measures everything form lop to comb height.

A properly used try stock will give 48 separate measurements for fitting the rifle or shotgun perfectly. A try stock gives a perfect pattern for making the stock. Just taking a length of pull and using an average for for castoff will only get close.

A try-stock is very important if having a new gun fitted, as shooting style can make a very big difference. I am still close to 6-foot, but my preferred LOP for a bolt-gun (single trigger) is 13 3/4 inches, up to 14 1/4 inches (to the front trigger) for a SxS shotgun or DR.

The reason? I mount the butt squarely on my pec, rather than out in the shoulder-pocket.

Many an unwary shooter has bloodied their nose with the thumb when shooting my nitro rifles.

Nothing, I was trying for a little bit of humour. If you have long arms then you would be dragging your knuckes...I'm 6'1" with an arm spread of 6'4", so my ape index is +3.
