470 Bullet test
      #45458 - 01/01/06 08:44 AM

1: Hawk 25 blows hammer
2: CP 25 blows hammer
3: Hawk + chisel
4: CP + chisel
5: Woodleigh 5 blows sledge
6: Hawk 5 blows sledge

Clearly the cast bullet fractured. Draw your own conclusions on the woodleigh and hawk.

Bonanza, I think I could find a better use for those bullets!

This was to simulate slamming into a bone and i'm not sure it proves anything, But the bullets did react differently to the same tourture.

1: The cast performace bullets fractured into pieces, which renders them useless on DG.

2: The woodleigh jacket split and the hawk just flattened out.

My conclusions:

1. Hawk is softer than Woodleigh.

2. The cast bullet is brittle. But comparing a hard cast (solid) to an expanding bullet is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. I would be interested in seeing the same test done with a Woodleigh solid versus a monolithic solid.

Bonanza

The "test" proves nothing and you will find
Woodleighs open up into "petals" and these
"ragged" petals create horrendous wounds channels
in animals that stay open and bleed profusely.

Bone also "gives" to a certain extent unlike
a sledge hammer.

The only bullet that looks anything like what I'd like to see in a recovered projectile is the Woodleigh!

Nicely mushroomed...

Good that you test. However, I would have tried to simulate flesh and bone. I have always thought that you could use a plastic bin filled with wet news paper, with wood of varieing hardness placed in it as a good test. THe wood would be placed 6 inches in then more paper then more wood. This would simulate skin, flesh, shoulder, organs, shoulder, flesh, skin. You could play around to get the right combo of wood and paper.

Colorado,

That's why I test bullets on flesh and bone.
Less stuffing around and it's the best test
medium available.

I agree, however, we do not have animals here that need culling, so we don't have much practical things to test on.

I saw somewhere a post were somebody in Oz killed something like 20 cow buffs in and afternoon culling. You could get good ballistics from those. It would have been nice to see some recovered projectiles.

Thanks,
Colorado
