rechambering vs. reboring
      #45451 - 01/01/06 06:21 AM

Can the collected wisdom here offer advice on the merits/demerits of rebarreling vs. reboring, e.g., cost, etc.? I'm thinking of something along the lines of .375 to .450/400.
And who would you recommend for a reboring job like this?
Thanks, and Happy New Year.

Doug.

My original post subject line should have said *rebarreling*, not rechambering. Sorry.

Ruger No.1 in 375 H&H.

This is a lose/lose proposal. You will lose ballistic performance and it will be expensive. The ruger can handle a hot .375 load with woodleigh 350 gain bullets.

I think the general concensus would be that re-boring is only an option if the original barrel is crucial to the function/value/appearance of the firearm. Examples would be unique barrel profile or hex-section which could not be easily replicated, front claw-mount on the barrel, makers engraving or unique proof-marks, exquisite full-length rib or quarter-rib, or some other aspect of historical significance.

If none of these apply, and they are unlikely to in the case of a Ruger No.1, then rebarrelling would be the cheapest, simplest, and most accurate option. (..in Australia at least!)

Jim Dubell bought the tooling from Cliff LaBounty and does superb reboring, as well as other work. Jim is also able to rebore double rifles at a reasonable cost. Some barrels are problematic in that there may be hard spots or other issues...Jim will tell you up front if this is the case. I personally use Jim's services and have only praise for his work quality and integrity. Jim can be contacted at: Delta Gun Shop, 989 Bear Creek Rd., Colville, WA, 99114

Here, in Canada, there are re-boring services, but re-barrelling is usually much less for the contoured barrel blank. Chambering and threading will bring the costs to about the same level.
: I'd sell the .375 and buy a new one in .400cal. Green Mountain sells .400 bore/.408 groove dia barrels through TOTW for les than $200.00. These are ready for chambering, threading and finishing.
: I am presently awaiting word from Track on the availability of a new Winchester taper Octagonal .50 cal with 1 in 24" twist for my Sharps action. They make them in most bore sizes from .375 to .50. Since theya re 4140 gun barrel quality steel, they should be just fine for any reasonable smokeless rounds, but check with GM.
