What are the optimum cartridges for buff in australia? Also the minimum that should be considered?

That's all very well for the natives but what about the poor tourist who has been nailed $5-6K for his hunt?

I have taken a lot of critters with a 6.5, but I do not think I will be taking them after anything that is big enough to stomp me!

Best you rephrase that statement !

I believe that for a one off trophy hunter or a casual hunter the minimum calibre should be 338Win Mag using Woodleigh 300gn round nose softs and solids.

Forget this crap about shooting our buff with a 6.5.
As far as I am concerned the persons involved were on an ego trip and have done their reputations more harm than good !

Oldsarge is exactly right. For the paying tourist-hunter, the .375 H&H should be considered the minimum. Any of the current .416s are better, and the .458 Win Mag is the great standby. Anything bigger is just gravy!

Ozzie water buff are big animals though, so premium controlled-expansion bullets are advised. This is probably more important than actual calibre.

Tony and Sarg,I am in complete agreeance with your comments as long as the person can cope with the recoil.
I have a mate who is very recoil shy ,however he is happy with and shoots confidently with the heavy projectiles in the 338wm. at around "2175 fps"
Ive seen the results.

I changed the mv after checking my records.

Well said.

I would suggest 375H&H as a minimum with AT LEAST 270gn
and preferably 300gn Controlled Expansion, Bonded Core bullets.

And make sure you can shoot straight off hand to 100 yards
as their aren't any trees to rest on on the flood plains.

Y'know Alan, I find that an interesting statement. I've always felt that the high velocity recoil from the .338 is far more unpleasant than the slower, if heavier, recoil of the .375. That may be due to the fact that my .375, Lily Martel, weighs in a 9.5 lbs in fighting trim and the .338's I've shot have been considerably lighter. I may be old, arthritic and bad-tempered but I find that despite the fraudulent old saw about "you carry it a lot more than you shoot it" a rifle with heft hangs more still in aiming, absorbs recoil better and gives the shooter greater confidence than some poofy little pencil. Featherweights for featherheads, IMO!

I might be young, arthritic, and the incarnation of pure evil in regards to my temperment, but I agree 100% about 9.5lb .375's versus a lighter, smaller caliber rifle.

As far as Elmer's statement goes, it can be reitterated by another statement made. I forget the author, Hunter, I want to say, and I am sure I will be corrected if wrong. It read, "Never send a boy to do a man's job."

500 is a nice round number, either followed by "Nitro Express" or by "cubic inch displacement".

Sarg,I seemed to have missed something here ????
My mate prefers to shoot a 338 loaded with 300gn rn softs or solids out of a sako stainless synthetic rifle.
The bullets have an mv of about 2175 fps.
My 375 shoots 300gn woodleighs at around 2200 fps.
Both sets of projectiles weigh 300GRAINS .

I am confused by your comments !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you mention that load in the intial post? If so, slap me! Naturally that load would kick less than a .375, especially mine that loves a 300 grain Nosler PT at 2750. And yes, that's the chronographed load and no, there are no pressure signs. And also no, I can't explain it either. Back on track, now, the .338 loads that I dislike tend to be 225 grains and considerably higher velocities. We don't see too many 300 grain .338's around here. Interesting idea. Sort of like a modern .333 Jeffrey, and that was one killer cartridge.
