You start by being born there. Not much opportunity for foreigners.

But you might be able to swing it in Mozambique or Tanzania.

If you have a busy season, you can look forward to $20K of income.

Or just get a job in the U.S. for $50K and spend $10K every other year hunting in Africa.

As 500graines said, it's extremely difficult for a foreigner to become a PH today. The first thing against you is that you're not a local. Second, you're not black (more countries are trying to get qualified black PHs), you don't speak two or three of the local languages, plus English, and perhaps one or two European languages. You also need to be a good bush mechanic. And lastly, not too many Americans I know would be happy with the pay an average PH earns in Africa.

That's the bad news.

Now, if someone were truely committed to becoming a PH, it may be possible to find a Safari company willing to take on an apprentice for several years and teach him the ropes, so to speak. But you better have a large bank account to tide you over.

Colorado,

500grains is having a point concerning Zim, Namibia and RSA. These countries are training their own PHs.

In France, we are training PHs who'll work in any foreign country when they get the country's PH license, just an administrative requirement.

You can try with the ACP, THE PROFESSIONAL HUNTERS ASSOCIATION ACP-OUTFITTERS

Note many of them are aristocrats (even though they hide it : Yann le Bouvier
Yann
( ie like Jackie Bouvier Kennedy), whose real name is le Bouvier Halna du Fretay.

Note Honor member, Jean de Thonel d’Orgeix whose aristocratic familie’s motto is SEMPER FIDELIS long before the 7th Marines Corps chose it.

Another whose first name is Bob , Bob Durieux is in fact a very nice lady.

Note they are not all frogs , but European mostly.
Their website is helping a lot. Find one of them who agrees to teach You every tricks of the trade, then You have to succeed with a theoretic and a practical exam, and you’ll become a graduated Class I Professional Hunter. At this point, You’d better be a good salesman and have nice relations ; if not be hired by a competent notorious PH.
You being an American could be an asset. Most of the clients are American, so it’s more fun to hunt with a fellow hunter instead of a questionable bloke like yours truly, hardly able to utter more than 20 words in English.
Good luck.

I was born in Pretoria, dual citizenship with RSA.

However, the pay really sucks...$20000.00 a year? Harsh reality. I could offer up that I am a professionally licsened pilot, mulitengine instrument commerical. And could fly the clients in and scout??

SO who is making all of the money on the safaris? I saw Mark Sullivan was selling his 600 nitro for $105000.00, that ain't peanuts.

Don't the Safari out fits have to pay big bucks for consessions on lands?

bulldog
quote : "What is the benefit if you still have to go through a countries requirements?"
In most of any profession there is 2 angles to consider : the capacity is the ability + the entitelment. In my case I am a biologist. I have the ability because I succeeded in all the exams required, but to work I have had to obtain a license to run a path lab.
The ACP is providing the proof that the PH is qualified, that is has the capacity and the skills.
When arriving in any country, his diplom is valid but he needs to get a license to be registred in the country and be authorised to work as a PH.
I imagine a PHASA PH in RSA has to obtain a license too. The license permits to work as a PH and could be removed should the PH break the law.
OK? Happy New Year
