Marrakai,

You go first...

When I spoke to him I offered $12.5K He said that he'd paid more for it than that. I'm sure the reserve price is right around $15K.

I've already got one!

Makes you wonder why he bothers to auction the damn thing if he knows what he wants for it.

Marrakai

Exactly. Why not just start the auction at his minimum and see if it sells?

Marrakai,

That is a beautiful rifle and one heck of a shooter.

Does she have a sister?

Sounds like he only had the gun a short time. Wonder why he wants to sell it.

He is selling a few of his rifles I believe because the wife wants him to. He also has a beautiful Westley Richards on gunsamerica.

Nigel,

I went to see the .475 #2 that is in this thread just before Christmas. The bores were in very good condition with a light frosting in the right barrel. The gun had been completely refinished. Upon close inspection the person who refinished the barrels had not done a job up to the standards of the original maker. At one time or another the barrels had surface pitting. The refinisher did not draw file deep enough to take out some small pits on the under side of the left barrel. Also light surface pitting/rust around the sling swivel on the barrel that had not been completely removed before the reblue. I pointed this out to the owner and a few other tell tale signs that the gun had been redone. It has sold and off to never never land only to turn up at a later date. No I did not purchase the rifle.

The .577 WR was also very nice however way out of my price range. Guess I will stick to my best quality .577 Alex Henry BPE.

I thought so. I knew there had to be a reason it wasn't moving.

If you saw the WR I would be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

I am glad that someone was able to physically look at this gun. Good info, thanks.

Bulldog,

It sounds like you personally know the owner of the .577WR.I am not going to mention any names on the net as thats not polite.

The .577WR is a very very nice piece. It is regulated for the 650gr bullet. What is interesting about the gun is the island style rear sight. I believe there are photos of this on the ad he is running. If I had an extra $38-40K in my pocket I might spring for this one:)))) Then again thats in the price range of a Jeffery underlever .600NE which to me is he holy grail of double rifles.

Is the same seller offering the Wilks 475#2 and the 577?

If so, I would pass on both based on his description of the Wilks:

This rifle's condition is fantastic in every way

IMHO, sounds like the guy is a speculator who knows nothing about the product.

Well, the joke's on you guys, I reckon!

Someone has wandered off with a Wilkes .475 #2 in 'fantastic' shootable condition (VG bores!), for maybe $15grand. The fact that it has been reblued once in its 100-year life (what gun hasn't?), or has evidence of a few tiny pits under the blueing, is entirely immaterial in a working double. A 'collector' would be a different story, of course, but the Wilkes was never put up as that, and the price reflects it. Sure we all want to find bargains at under 10 grand, but that Wilkes will knock any Searcy/Merkel/CalRigby into a cocked hat!

Good luck to the bugger who ended up with it!

BTW, I agree with you about the description Griz, words like 'fantastic' (derived from 'fantasy') have no place in the description of a gun, unless they are describing bulino with coloured inlays maybe, or Accuracy International's Chassis System gunstock!

Grizzly,

Yes the same fellow is selling the .557WR that sold the .475 #2 Wilks.

Marrakai:

You're right, of course. From what it sounds like it really was, the price was fair, it just wasn't a steal on Brit DR in "fantastic" condition. If I'd had it sent to me on approval based on the seller's description, I'd have been annoyed. I bet it would have moved faster had it been more accurately described.
