SHOT PLACEMENT ON CAPE BUFFALO
      #44666 - 23/12/05 01:22 AM

Greetings to all. Since I am a new member, I thought this might be a good venue to introduce myslef by way of a new post. As the subject implies, please look at the attached photo of my buffalo taken this past June and comment on the shot placement. It is readily visible in the picture, right on the shoulder. It took two more shots to bring him down, but they were in quick succession so I think he would have droped anyway. The rifle is a Ruger 416 Rigby and the bullet was a 400gr Swift A Frame loaded to 2375 fps. Thanks and I'm glad to be aboard. jorge

jorge, first of all, I'd like to welcome you to NE. Glad you decided to join us.

That is a very nice Buffalo. As far as commenting on the shot placement, all I can say is that it must have been fine, because he's dead. What angle was he standing at?...full broadside, quartering shot?

What sort of penetration did you get with the Swifts?

Mike, thanks for the welcome. He was standing full broadside at about 100 yards. Don't know about the penetration as I (like an idiot) forgot to ask for the bullets until it was too late, but I an tell you this, when we rolled him over, he squirted blood out from that hole like a fire hose so I know it reached the heart. jorge

Welcome, from me also.

Good shot. I guess from your second post that the bullet from this shoulder shot didn't exit. Am I correct?

JPK: thanks. none of the softs exited. The solid did. I attempted to spine him with the third shot and the bullet pierced both lungs and zipped through. jorge

No worries there, mate! The blood around the nostrils tells the story too.

In my experience it is rare to dump a big animal like a buffalo with one shot from anything. The .416 calibre is marvellous for big bovines, and delivery to the point of the shoulder is just about perfect with premium bullets. On a number of occasions I have deliberately shot high for the spine, where it dips down between the shoulder-blades, both from the front (into the 'adam's apple' under the chin when he looks down his nose at you) and from the side. Its the only reliable 'one shot stopper' on a buff IMO, but they still usually need another behind the ear on the ground to finalise the encounter. I use doubles mainly these days, so any quarry usually gets a quick 'right-and-left' regardless, followed by a hasty reload!

You and your .416 will fit in here just fine, Jorge.

Welcome! I took my first with a 416 Rigby, also. The shot looks just fine to me. Nice buffalo!

Jorge, your shot placement was excellent, and I would hope to do as well myself. It appears as though every buffalo situation is a bit different, and seldom does the same, exact shot opportunity present itself.

It seems as though the biggest problem with shoulder shots is the tendancy to shoot too high.........

I took the buffalo in Dande North, Zimbabwe with PH John Sharp on 12 June. Regarding the blood near the nostrils, there was a LOT of it by the time we got to him that was cleaned up for the photos. Allen, when the buff didn't go down until the third shot, I thought my initial first shot was a tad low, although it certainly broke his shoulder. You and others had cautioned me about the tendency to shoot to high, so I purposely aimed lower than I normally do on shoulder shots. Thanks, again for the welcome gents. jorge

Jorge,

I am surprised you had to shoot that buffalo, as Mr. Sharp seems to be the type of fellow would could have wrestled that buffalo into the back of the Cruiser to keep as a pet. Is it true that his Cruiser folds out into a mobile Gold's Gym?

Nice looking trophy!

You're right about P.H. Sharp. He looks like one tough cookie.

Yeah, John's a pretty tough guy, certainly the kind of guy you want with you in a bar fight or buffalo. It was a tough hunt boys, four and a half days of tough hunting lots of walking, lots of hills, lots of sweating!!! He's not the biggest buff around, but he's now my favorite trophy. I've never hunted harder. On the gym, he never worked out while I was there, but he does have a weight and parallel bars area back in camp and he always takes time to work out every day. jorge
