Generally speaking, how many rounds is an old English double good for? How about newly manufactured rifles? Those of you who reload, was barrel life a factor in your load development? And once the barrels are shot out, how much accuracy is lost at the short distances (50yds) that we normally use our doubles?

armbar I don't think there is anyone who can give you a difinetive answer to that question, certainly not me! However, I am of the opinion that with proper care, and feeding, while useing proper loads that shoot to the regulation of the rifle, you will not live long enough to wear the barrels out on a double rifle useing modern smokeless powders. The wear you will experience will be from poor cleaning, and care of the mateing surfaces of your double rifle, not from shooting it!

Armbar,

I don't modify my load down at all - what I do avoid if possible
and definately at the range when practising is firing round after round
and getting the barrels / barrel metal hot - after all, more wear is caused
when the barrels metal is hot.

In hunting DG there is not much you can do about it.

I don't think you or I will ever wear out a DR and I shoot a fair number
of rounds.

Worn barrels are not a major problem unless the rifling has gone completely.
On older English guns, because of cordite you often see wear and dark grooves
in the barrel but what I look for is that the rifling is still there AND that the
last half of the rifling is good as this is more important.

DUGABOY1 is correct about more wear being caused by cleaning and
not looking after the gun.

If anyone is worried about barrel life in a double rifle, just shoot factory ammo. At the price of the stuff, there are very few of us who could come close to wearing a barrel out. But if your income is such that the price of factory ammo for the nitro express calibers is no concern for a few thousand rounds, then get a rifle in .600 NE and I personally guarantee that you will not fire enough rounds to wear the barrel out.

Most of the problems with barrels on older English/Continental double rifles comes from Cordite cutting and corrosive primers, and negligence in proper care of the rifle after shooting.

I don't think you'll have to worry about wearing aout a set of barrels in your life time.

There is more barrel wear from CLEANING than with shooting! You can't clean something that's already clean!

I feel that any rifle, other than a match-target weapon, will long out-live it's owner!

I am going to do my best to wear out the barrels on my double rifles.. on game of course.

If I am lucky enough to do so, I will have JJ Perodeau just make me some new bbls.
