Christer

I will edit this message and give you some good tips later on.

What sort of price range are you looking at? I can recommend all sorts of "icon" wines, plus give you the names of good wineries for more standard premium level table wines.

You will have to wait a while for my own "Carrara" label as it hasn't been released yet

The type of wine I look at prmary is in the pricerange up to about 10 us dollars.

We can only by a limited assortment of Australian wine in Sweden. So I have to hope that your recomendations will be availeble here.

Something to wait for will be your own Carrara, what time plans do you have and what production do you plan, local, nation, export?

Tatachilla chardonay is a ripper we reckon and most of just about all the $20Aud Cabernet sauvignion`s are good value. For the topline stuff Hensckes Hill of Grace and Penfolds Grange Hermitage are way up there in price still havent bugled a bottle by the campfire yet lol.

OK Christer here goes post no.1 - you asked for it.

gryphons recommendations are pretty good too.

Prices are my guesstimates and in Australia in $A. All 750ml bottles. My guess is a wine costing A$10 here would cost about US$10 in
Sweden with freight and Swedish alcohol taxes, but don't hold me to it.

Vintage years are not as important in premium Australia wine growing regions as in Europe due to the better consistency
of favourable weather conditions from year to year. 1996 was a very good year though.

Regions - Premium regions in my opinion and with my biases: Barossa Valley (of course) - oldest premium
wine region in Australia; Eden Valley - next to Barossa Valley - best region in Australia for crisp Rieslings;
Clare Valley - also for Rieslings; Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra - famous for Cabernet Sauvignon;
Pathdaway - similar to Coonawarra; Wraughtonbully - similar to Padthaway but not well know and terrible
name; Margaret River in West Aust; Yarra Valley near Melbourne; and some of the districts in Western
Victoria also make good wines.

Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare and Margaret Rivers all have "Meditteranean" type weathers - cool
wet winters with warm dry summers - perfect for premium grape growing and ripening.

"Icon" Wines
Penfolds Grange - Australia's flagship wine - price for current release vintage well in excess of $200 - on
label as Shiraz but sometimes just under 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
Penfolds RWT - RWT stands for Red Wine Trials - the wines that fail to make Grange - probably $200 +
Henschke Hill of Grace - shiraz from a 100+ year old vineyard in the Barossa Valley - $200
Henschke Mount Edelstone - old vine shira - around $120?
St Hallett Old Block Shiraz - an original Barossa old vine shiraz - $45
Rockford Basket Press - an original Barossa old vine shiraz - $35
Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz - old vine shiraz - 1500 ml - $100
Barossa Valley Estates E&E Shiraz - old vine shiraz - $65 ?
Torbreck Run Rig - $200+
St Hallett "The Reward" Cabernet Sauvignon - $45
Penfolds 707 - $80?
Penfolds St Henri

Premium wines say $15 to $30
Anything St Hallett, Peter Lehmann, Rockfords, Henschke is good - whites and reds
St Hallett Faith Shiraz - $20 - some of my grapes go to this wine
St Hallett Blackwell Shiraz - $27
Petaluma red and whites are also very good
Woddstock whites from Hunter Valley are good

Good priced drinkable wines $10 - $15
St Hallett Gamekeepers Reserve - predominantly Grenache
St Hallett Poachers Blend - was mainly Chenin Blanc now Semillon

Jacob's Creek wines from Orlando is Australia's biggest brand exported. Jacob's Creek Premium range
is quite good.

Sparkling - try a Sparkling Burgundy ie red wine. Used to be very popular in Australia and now
making a comeback.
Sparkling whites - Domaine Chandon, Petaluma Croser, Pipers Brook (Tasmania) are very good.

Most of these wines are reds and from the Barossa Valley which is the wines I know best. I supply to
Southcorp (Aust's biggest winery - Penfolds, Lindemanns, Rosemount, Seppelts etc etc brands) and
St Hallett (this group also includes Tatachilla, Petaluma among others).

That will do it for now. If you tell me some of the names you see over there I can make recommendations.

PS When the Carrara label is ready for release you here will certainly hear of it.

Christer

I've added some comments to your extensive list only where I can though. You must be a speed typist.

Killawarra Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml AU $ 12
Capricorn Estates Merlot 2001 750 ml AU $ 12
Hardys Varietal Range Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 750 ml AU $ 12
Hardys Australian Stamp Shiraz Cabernet 750 ml AU $ 12
Somerton Shiraz Grenache Mourvèdre 750 ml AU $ 13
Yaranda Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 750 ml AU $ 13
De Bortoli Shiraz 2001 750 ml AU $ 13
Lindemans Cawarra Shiraz Cabernet 750 ml AU $ 13
Jacob's Creek Shiraz Cabernet 750 ml AU $ 14

Penfolds Rawson's Retreat Shiraz Cabernet 750 ml AU $ 14
Tried it. Its OK

Footsteps Merlot 2001 750 ml AU $ 14
Lindemans Bin 50 Shiraz 750 ml AU $ 14
Trottwood Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 750 ml AU $ 14
Lindemans Bin 45 Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml AU $ 16

Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 750 ml AU $ 17
good medium priced wine

Black Opal Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml AU $ 17
I think this a Beringer Blass wine under their US "Black Opal" label

Rosemount Shiraz 750 ml AU $ 18
Bin 555 Shiraz Wyndham Estate 2000 750 ml AU $ 19
Brown Brothers Shiraz 750 ml AU $ 20
Wolf Blass Yellow Label Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml AU $ 20
worth trying

Penfolds Shiraz-Mourvèdre Bin 2 750 ml AU $ 21
shiraz grenache blend - Barossa Valley is noted for Shiraz, Grenache or Mourvedre, Semillon and Riesling (Eden Valley). Give it a try. Likely to be a soft wine

Barwang Merlot 1998 750 ml AU $ 21

Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz 750 ml AU $ 30
Excellent Barossa siraz in the mid price range - I live near Kalimna road

Jacob's Creek Reserve Shiraz 1998 750 ml AU $ 30
Good premium shiraz from Orlando in their Jacobs Creek range. Tried this one in its first release year

Sandalford Shiraz 1999 750 ml AU $ 34
Yering Station Pinot Noir 2000 750 ml AU $ 36
Western Range Accord Shiraz 2001 750 ml AU $ 38

The McCrae Wood Shiraz 1999 750 ml AU $ 44
worth trying if you want to spend $44 but probably better ones for the price

Leasingham Classic Clare Cabernet Sauvignon 1997 750 ml AU $ 49
good higher priced wine

Lindemans Pyrus 1998 750 ml AU $ 58
Icon wine

Eileen Hardy Shiraz 1999 750 ml AU $ 99
Super icon wine - Won the Jimmy Watson Trophy one year - not sure which vintage but is an excellent wine if you want to spend this much

As for price ranges, statistically a "premium wine" is one over A$10, but I use the following price ranges $10 to $15 lower priced (premium) wines, $15 to $35 (medium) $35 + higher priced. There are also many drinkable wines in the $7 to $10 bracket as well.

But looking through the list there is probably not any I would not try!

Having worked for Cleveland winery in Vic on and off for twenty years i have to show some bias and promote their "Methode Champenoise" sparkling. Now what about our fortified`s (muscats tokays etc) that are something akin to promised land stuff, i did read a review on a noted French wine maker that was introduced to our famous nth east Vic muscats where he exclaimed "mon Dieu it is impossible for that to have come from a grape" he WAS impressed to say the least--get some in ya today yumm.

aah Gryphon, my long lost buddy, we must get together to try some of Victoria's world famous muscats.

So you do or used to work in the Rutherglen region? Nice situated, good wines plus sambar not too far away.

Frederik

No not an expert by any means. I used to be an executive of a winery and live in a wine grape region of Australia.

I also have vineyards and we produce grapes for two labels, "St Hallett" and "Penfolds". Penfolds is part of the largest wine group in Australia and makes a number of very fine reds, including the Australian flagship wine, "Grange". St Hallett is a label of a smaller producer and is based in the Barossa Valley and also makes a number of very drinkable wines.

We are new to making our own wines, under the "Carrara" label and when they are available I will let you all know. They will be very limited in quantity. The name Carrara is derived from a bearby hill, Carrara Hill which had a marble quarry on it several decades ago. The hill was named after Carrara in Italy which I was lucky enough to visit last year in Tuscany, and is and was a famous region for fine marble since antiquity.

As to enjoying wine, I always make a resolution each year to drink more wine. For health reasons, of course.

John

For marketing you should need some real good photos from your wineyard. I can accept the work and will give you a very fair daily rate; Acomodation, wine and bread, however the start cost would be quit high about 2000 Aus. dollars to cover the flight

If you chose not to accept my offer I hope you can arrange some pics yourself. It would be very interesting to see how it looks.
