Front Sight...Hooded or Not
      #43808 - 12/12/05 05:47 PM

What do you guys think of a front sight hood? What are the pros and cons of getting a DR with or without one? I think I want to get one on my DR mainly as a sight protector in case the rifle gets dropped. Are there things I am not thinking about as far as the hood. Most of the Searcy's I have seen don't have the hood...Is there a reason for this?

Also kind of off topic but what does it mean when someone says the front trigger of a DR is a "set trigger for better accuracy in long range shooting"?

My HO - Don't get a hood.

They were used to protect and / or shade the front sight
but in reality you don't need one - better to get a front sight
that maintains the same light refraction regardless of where
the sun is shining.

A set trigger is something normally found on bolt guns where
you push the trigger forwards which "sets" it so it then only
requires a light pull to fire the gun.

I can't remember seeing one on a DR unless they are mistaking
a set trigger for the front trigger that is hinged (like on some
Holland shotguns) to stop you hitting it hard on recoil.

I like a hood on a scoped rifle to protect the front sight when using the scope, but I do not like a hood when using the rifle with iron sights.
The exception is a H&K 91. The "hood" is very large and does not get in the way. The front post is centered in the "hood", in low light if you cannot see the post, just put the target in the center of the hood and press the trigger. Not to confuse a combat rifle with a DG rifle, but.... Sometimes the shoting situation is similar IE close and fast.

My Hollis has a hood. I usually shoot it without the hood on the rifle.

A front sight hood is one of those things you always get. I use them enough that I've replaced missing ones on a couple of DRs. I find them handy when hunting in the open in bright sun and they protect the bead when riding in the hunting car. If you don't like it, just leave it in the case.

Some continental DRs had a front trigger that was a single set trigger (you pushed forward on the trigger to set it), as opposed to a double set trigger on a single barrel rifle. These were especially common on pre-war German double rifles. I haven't seen one on a new DR in years.

Merkel offered a set trigger option for their small caliber doubles fairly recently, 9.3x74 and down (don't know if they still do ). Cape Outfitters had a few of these some years back, but I haven't seen any for sale in the US in the last few years.

For a short time I had a Continental Arms 450 3.25"NE that had set triggers front and back. It was an unusual rifle in that it was under 8 1/4 pounds (in fact if I recall correctly, it may have been closer to 7 3/4). Unfortunately, the groove diameter was under .454.

My rifles that have irons and a scope, the hood is left on for the sight's prtoection. When/if removing the scope for iron sight use, the hood also comes off.
: My rifles that have no scopes have no hoods on the front sight.
: For iron sights, I prefer an ivory bead for a front sight, with shallow "V" for the rear sight. I find this combination gives almost as good accuracy on target as a low powered scope, and the ivory shows perfectly in the darker forest on game.
: Any comercial rear sight can be filed to the shallow "V" like an 'express' sight. I have done this on several guns including a .375 Winchester BB 94XTR and it's perfect - coupled with the ivory bead. That rifle is exceptionaly fast & hard shooting and has taken 2 mature moose for me so far.
