Hi Gents: I first joined in May and have been bitten by a new interest in double guns rifles and shotguns. I am new to the Africa/DR stuff but look forward to learning from you and perhaps sharing what I have learned. I own a Mod 70 .375H&H Classic Stainless but am more and more interested in DR's and Africa. I am considering ordering a Searcy .450-400 PH in case hardened. (Just spoke with Butch this week). I don't tend to own a lot of guns but enjoy getting to know the few that I have intimately through handloading and shoooting them! Thanks, ScottW

Scott:

Welcome to the party. I can't wait to see the new case hardening Butch is coming out with - I hope he has one for viewing at DSC.

The .450/400 is a great round and highly thought after by the guys on this forum.

If you could, update your profile se we know where you are from.

Thanks. I spoke with Butch on Thursday and he said he was planning on having a case hardened PH at Reno. I would assume he'll also have one at Dallas. ScottW

ScottW

450/400 is a great calibre and a good starter for a 1st DR.
The other would be 9.3 x 74R.

Re colour case hardening - I personally don't think CCH
looks good on Heavy Engraved guns - they end up looking like
Spanish guns which can often look "cheap"

Just my HO.

Good luck with your purchase and ask away on the forum
as alot of guys here have heaps of experience they are willing
to pass on.

Welcome, ScottW, you picked a good place, if you're interested in Double rifles. The combined double rifle knowledge here has to be close to 100 yrs. We can use some of your knowledge, as well! Nobody is too old to learn, so bring it on.

.500Nitro: I am of the same opinion regarding the case hardened. If not done well it can look cheap or at least not look of the quality one would expect at the prices we would pay for a good DR. I doubt Butch would put out anything that didn't say "quality" though. It will be interesting to see the case hardened anyway. BTW are you gents going to Dallas or Reno, if either? I think my wife wants to go, so that pretty much means Dallas due to cost being cheaper. Take care, ScottW

DUGABOY1: Thanks...lot's to learn on the DR side. I come to this forum humbled by all of your knowledge and hope to learn and be mentored along the way if it is alright. I miss the passion of shooting on the bolt side the way that I think I would in a DR (though I have yet to shoot one, to be honest). A bolt is strictly a tool to me; while a DR, well that is passion and art and goosebumps! ScottW

ScottW, My E-mail is DUGABOY1@aol.com if you live near the D/FW area, I have several double rifles, and I'd be happy to meet you at one of our ranges, and let you shoot a couple of them, if you'd like!

DUGABOY1: That is a very kind offer! Thank you very much. Can you recommend a book or two to learn a little more about DR's so I can get the basics down? I sure would appreciate it! ScottW

African Rifles and Cartridges by John "Pondoro" Taylor. It is the best primer for a very bad, incurable, sickness. Parts may be slightly off color for the closing of 2005, but the stories are greatly entertaining, quite knowledgable, and the heart of it all, the cartridges and the beasts that fire them is very well told.

By the way, I don't have a double rifle yet, but I have shot doubles. Save yourself now, get out while you can! OK, you can't, welcome aboard then!

500 is a nice round number, either followed by "Nitro Express" or by "cubic inch displacement".
