Christmas Gifts
      #43582 - 11/12/05 02:24 AM

Ok is anyone's sweetie going to give you any really nice gifts of the double rifle persuasion? Even accessories?

Perhaps a gift to give to yourself?

If so please don't post as it will upset the rest of us poor sods. No only joking, please post and share your expected joy with us.

My Christmas list:

1. A Holland and Holland Royal Ejector double rifle in .375 Flanged Mag. Made pre-1914. Mint original condition in original case, with all accessories.

2. A Purdey best quality hammerless self-opening 28 ga. SLE. Ditto on period of manufacture and accessories.

3. Less time at work. More time to hunt, shoot and play

4. A case of good whiskey.

5. Etc.

I put this list on my wife's pillow rolled around the stem of a red rose bud and tied with a velvet ribbon.

What do you think? Will I get what I want?

Merry Christmas,
Curl

A timely question indeed! I have put in a request for "The Express Rifle" book. Maybe after reading it I will be able to answer questions instead of just asking them! Anyone have this book? How about some reviews? Armbar.

Curl:

Hmmmm. So, a pre-1914 Holland, chambered for a cartridge introduced in 1912. Are you sure that you've made it hard enough?

Curl,

I think you might need to wrap a string of pearls and hang some diamond earings off that rose too.

400NE,

Yeah I knew it was a short window of opportunity, but it's Christmas, isn't it? I definitely want the rifle to be pre-WW1.

Nitro,

You have the right idea, and I have been gathering the weapons.

We're going into N.Y. City tomorrow for the day. During the course of the day we will be stopping at the Beretta Store. I figure if I give enough hints something has to stick. My wife should get the idea. I know she has some jewelry store lined up for me to see also.
Tomorrow we will see which one of us is better at dropping hints. I think she will win, but I might get something good for Christmas.

Ok, dream list here:

A Purdey .600 NE DR with full bulino game scenes engraved by the Brown Brothers.

A whole barrel of Jack Daniels Single Barrel.

A case of 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

Reservations at The French Laundry in Yountville, CA.

Hey, one can dream, right?

This year on Christmas Eve I will be staying in Bikaner in India and staying at a palace (now obviously a hotel). Then on Christmas Day finishing at Mandawa and staying in a castle.

A lovely Christmas gift would be to find a trove of double rifles so far not sold off to the foreign devils. I think the place has been heavily fished before in recent years so has largely been fished out, but it doesn't hurt to drop a line or two to see if there are any bites!

As I also have an interest in collecting swords, knives etc I think something of this line might find its way into my duffel by the end of the trip.

Visions of a 500NE Westley Richards, dancing in my head....

But it will be like the old days coming from a family of 5 kids - hoping for that Winchester 30-30 but receiving underwear and socks.

Since I turn 50 in January, the "practical gift" I am likely to find under the tree is the 50 year old equivalent of underwear and socks - a colonoscopy. Just hope they don't perform it under the tree.

Maybe they can bore sight me while they're at it.

I would go for the DR instead of the colonoscopy...Just my opinion.

Well, my wife and I went to the Beretta Gallery in N.Y.C. yesterday. The gun rooms were broken down into 2 catagories. Those under $25,000 and those over $25,000. The salesman asked me multiple times to stop drooling on the guns it causes them to rust.
I couldn't convince her to buy me another gun, but I did get one beautiful shooting jacket. I promised her I would act surprised when I opened the package Christmas.

Bulldog,

Now I consider myself a fairly tough guy. College football and wrestler, and Army Officer and all.

But, I think I would go with the colon scope rather than have a double Westley Richards entered into an exit only orafice.

Even the thought of a DR placed where the sun never shines makes me shudder. You are the man!

All you folks can talk about the 2000 yard shot with a double, but Bulldog's got you beat. And he doesn't even need a rifle case.....

Rigby, Holland & Holland, Purdey, Westley Richards, etc.
I lust for all of them. This Christmas? Being a widower, I have to buy for myself. A second hand Chapuis 470 in like new condition. I will send it to JJ for service, stock shortening, and to have that hideous beavertail forend converted to a splinter.
