Searcy rifles

looking at the PH, and the delux model. which caliber to get. Is a 470NE a good choice or should I go 500Ne or maybe the 577?. I know that 470 is used and ammo is easy to get and load, how about the other calibers and if they are nessary. I guess it has a lot to do if you can hit anything with it. I am assuming that all on this forum plan to hunt or have hunted dangerous animals. from the post's from others the 470 on up are not for casual plinking!!!. I think I am going to go with Searcy, I like the idea of having the old english rifle ,but the thought of something would happen to the gun I could not bear the thought. Your thought's

I think there is certain mystique to the .577, the .500 considered the pro's choice, and the .470 being easy to load, find and actually shoot. From what I understand, Searcy will make the rifle a heavy as you need. I think Doc is ordering a Searcy .577

BTW, Elmer Keith owned and hunted with a .500

470NEDB,

Your question was a Searcy in:

470 NE,
500 NE, or
577 NE.

I faced the same question 4 years ago and selected the .500 NE because I thought the .577 was too heavy to comfortably carry on long stalks (8 miles or more).

In hindsight the .470 might have been a better choice because it kicks a little less, ammo is easier to find and resale is better.

470:

bonanza is correct, my dad, Doc52, and I are having Butch build us a .577. We already have a .500 NE DR and numerous other caliber rifles in the .400 class, so we went bigger.

Butch is a great guy and in my opinion makes a hell of a rifle.

Do a search on here and check out what everyone says about buying an older double - if you don't know what you're looking for you can get seriously burned if you don't take the proper steps.

But, back to your original post, I would go with the .500 NE. The .470 will kill anything on the planet, but the .500 has that little bit more should you need it.

The .577 is way too big to start with if you don't already have a heavy DR in your safe.

Just my opinions...

I faced the same question as you and just put my deposit down a couple months ago. I went with the 500 NE Sidelock. My advice would be to call, or better yet see, Butch and speak to him. He will give you a very honest recomendation as to caliber and model for your purposes. If I were you I would try very hard to get your order in before January as Butch gets a flood of orders at the SCI and DSC shows. I would agree not to get the 577 as a first DR, it is very specialized and very heavy. Go with the 470 or 500, I'm pretty sure Butch will say the same thing.

Before anything else, do a search on Searcy because there is a wealth of info on this site. Also try accuratereloading.com.
