Can anyone recommend a source for .450#2 snap caps? They are not available from A-Zoom,Galazans, or New England Custom Guns.

Don't know about 450 #2 but who makes the best snap caps in general for DR calibers?

I made my own by fitting pencil erasers into the primer pockets. It works well IMO. Others have suggested silicone in the pockets.

Another suggestion I've heard about is to put leather into primer pockets.

In my opinion pencil erasers, silicone, or leather would be too soft to provide the dampening necessary to do the job. I have seen hard nylon, as in A-Zoom, or spring loaded hard plastic. I suppose those are ok, but I would hesitate.

I have a de-cocker I made out of the butt of a shed deer antler with a piece of 1/2" round brass bar mounted. The solid brass certainly does the job. You would be surprised at the indentation the firing pins will make in the solid brass. It makes one realize how much force you are trying to dampen.

Here's a hasty pic of what I am talking about:

With the barrels off the gun, you firmly hold the brass against the face of the breach at the firing pin, and pull the trigger. Here's a look at how much of a dent the firing pins make:

After a period of use the tip gets distorted. I then just file it flat again and start over.

Again, I just don't think a soft material will provide any protection when decocking or dry firing. Of course, my decocker is no good for dry firing!

Best regards,

The best way to de-cock is to hold the triggers when you close the action.

bonanza,

You can't do that with a gun equipped with ejectors, and it also will not work with some guns equipped with an automatic safety.

ENID, if you can't find a real pair of snap caps for your 450 No2 you can make your own by useing a pair of your empty brass cases. Drill the primer pockets out to the proper diameter to accept the 38 spcl, or 357Mag A-Zoom snap caps flush with the base of the case. Glue in the pistol snap caps, then fill the case with fluid steel, or bedding compound. Then cut the finished case off just rear of the shoulder, with a hacksaw! Drop them in your brass polisher, and they will shine like factory made snap caps, with the proper headstamp!

This isn't my idea, as it has been done for many years before a lot of snap caps were available in the USA!

Other than using erasers, what use could be filled into the primer pockets of empty cases? Bedding compound as Mac suggests, or is this just too simple?

NitroX, I think you misunderstood, The primer packets are drilled out to accept 357 Mag pistol snapcaps! The case is then filled with the bedding compound to make the cases heavy like a loaded round,as well as hold the pistol snapcap permenantly, then cut short, at about 2" forward of the rim. The weight is needed,if you have ejectors, to make the ejectors work properly. I don't think bedding compound in the primer packet would last more that a couple of snapps. Also if all you want the snapcaps for is to releave the springs, and HORN STRIKER BLOCK can be bought from Galazan (Connecticut Shotguns) for $30 US. I don't think the strikers will last too long with the soild brass/deerhorn striker block pictured in this string, but I could be wrong!

Do a search for Horn striker block

Enid

Sorry this response it belated I have not visited the site for some time.

you may want to drop (by e-mail) Kynamco in the U.K a line, they offer nickel plated snap caps for many of the older N.E calibres using their own brass cases as the chasis for the caps, the primer pockets are filled with a hard moulded rubber plug of a much harder composition that pencil eraser or silicone.

They work fine and re-assert themselves after letting down the strikers.

In the U.K a pair of caps wil lcost around the £23 mark ($40 app).

I do not know if the .450 #2 is in their standard list but as they are none too complex a design they may well run you up a pair.

Alternatively you could try Holland and Holland in Bruton Street, London, the person to contact their being Peter Chismon, he is the person who handles all rifle accessories and guncases, I am certain Peter would be able to commission a pair for you although the price is likely to be a "little higher" possibly around £70, but these would be made as a one-off order.

Hope this helps

This is a great method. I have used it, Subed Garrilla hair fiberglass filler in place of bedding compound, It's what I had at the time, auto work. I think even "bondo" would work.

Sanded or cheesegrated bondo? One or multiple coats?

Personally I do not think bondo would last in the primer pocket long with the force being imparted on it. Bondo, I feel, would be too brittle, and if it lasted longer than one striking, would surprise me. I would expect nice blue pieces of sweet smelling paint cracker being stuck on the face, the water table, the breech, and probably falling down into the bore after firing with bondo filled primer pockets. It just sounds like a recipe for a mess to me.

While I loate fiberglass filler from an automotive standpoint, I could see it surviving the impact caused by a trigger pull much better than bondo.
