Best buff hunt in Australia?
      #42915 - 03/12/05 10:58 PM

I am considering going on a Buffalo hunt in Australia in the next year or two. Can you guys give me the names of some reputable outfitters. Probably looking for a combo hunt of some kind with the buff being the primary quarry. Where is the best area for very large trophy buff. I am willing to spend some extra money to get a chance at a exceptional trophy. How much should I plan on spending? Are multiple buff hunts available and how much extra are each extra buffalo? Thanks for the help.

There are a number of good operators, however I have no hesitation in recommending Matt Graham, who has just taken over Hunt Australia following Bob Penfold's 'semi-retirement'.

mattgraham@huntaust.com.au

You can even PM Matt through this forum: username Matt_Graham

NitroX hunted with him last year and wrote up his experiences in these pages: GanGan Buff Hunt

I have a Model 70 in 458 winnie. I am currently awaiting eagerly the delivery of a Searcy 500 NE Sidelock. Should be ready in april or may of next year. Also have a 338 Win. Obviously I have a few others but probably not suitable for DG.

Is there somewhere that is known for very large trophy's. I am looking for something above 105. This will probably be my only buff trip to Australia for a while so would like to make it count.

Bulldog,

Looking and finding a 115+ is a big ask unless it's
a tethered farm bullock or cow.

I don't think any PH would guarantee you a 115+ but
some areas are definately larger (100+ consistent).

Matt Graham - Hunt Australia
Graham Williams - Outback Expeditions Hunting Safaris

Good luck.

Hardly worth answering. There are no canned buffalo hunts in Australia to my knowledge.

Better book a two-week hunt minimum, and do a lot of prayin'!

What about that station out of Darwin where
you can shoot the south pacific seven
in 3 days ?

I won't mention names until I get it right but
I know people fly in, shoot and fly out 3 - 5 days
later.

If that's what they want to do, so be it but it isn't
my cup of tea.

What species are included in the South Pacific 7? The primary quarry will be buff but if I can take some other nice trophies during the hunt so be it.

Even though I am a member of SCI, I am not 100% sure
as these things don't interest me much.

I think it includes Buff, the Scrub Bull and deer species
but someone else may know more.

Mary River Wildlife Ranch, run by Kevin Gleeson. Can't find a web-site though. They used to have one....

Marrakai,

Yes, that's it.

What do yu think ?

Do you class Mary River as "canned" hunting ?

Bulldog

As mentioned I can personally recommend based on my personal hunts with them:

* Matt Graham of Hunt Australia

* Graham Williams of Australian Buffalo Hunters.

Both have LINKs pages on the NitroExpress.com South Pacific Outfitters LINKS forum. These pages include contact details, web sites , email addresses etc.

I have also written up two hunting stories:

Buffalo hunt at Gan Gan - do a search on "Gan Gan" with Hunt Australia 2004

and

"Buff, Bulls, Boars and Barramundi" with Graham Williams this year. Story STILL not completed and unlikely to be before I head off to India as I am burning up a lot of hours to get ready. Still over half the hunts are listed and a good lot of photos. They are both in the Australian hunting forum of NitroExpress.com

Both hunts were enjoyable and each was different in a number of ways, but not negative. Coastal swamps vs Inland rivers, Sweeping horns vs Crescent shaped horns, mobile camp vs fixed camps, among others.

I believe Hunt Australia takes a few animals (two or three) of around 105 to 108 and sometimes bigger each year. You have to be lucky, or be selective and hunt very hard if you really want one.

Graham Williams has also taken some very large and well scoring buffalo trophies as well.

I think you are right, in not preferring 'ranch hunting". The wild stuff is much much more fun.

Other game to consider in the Territory would be:

banteng bull trophy (a wild cattle species in the Coburg Peninsula of the NT);
scrub bull trophy (wild or feral bull cattle are good hunts);
boar.

Other hunts eg to Northern Queensland for chital stag (deer) and New Caledonia for World Class Rusa stag (deer) could also be booked with various outfitters.
