Three doubles fondled
      #42511 - 29/11/05 03:51 PM

All,

I decided to stop by the New Great OutDoor Shop/Bass Pro Shop on the way home tonight to kill some time. I went to the "Fine gun room" and ogled the three doubles they had. One was a $50000.00 Thye in .470 NE. Very clean, maybe 50 rounds through it. I loved it. They also had a well used but still mechanically sound Jefferys .375H&H flanged for $12999.00. This gun was built around 1960 and I'm sure spent a large amount of its time in Africa. It felt very solid and quick to point. They also had a Rodda hammer, for $4700.00 that I thought was a POS, in 500/450 BPE. I think these guns are around 20% over priced. Heck they had well used pre 64 Model 70's for up to $6500.00!

The Jefferys did have some pitting under the forestock on both barrles. What does this mean about its use? Is this just grit rubbing or rust. I didn't see any rust, but it was re-blued I think. The express sight was loose as well.
Still was a great feeling gun. Oh yeah, it had a Webely action. Barrles looked clean, but I didn't get a really good look at them. Had to act like I was really a buyer to get to handle the guns. Funny, though, I knew more about the doubles than the sales slime, he admitted it, and I'm a greenhorn with doubles. You would think they would educate these guys a little better.

Jason

PS: I understand humor of this being a Bass Pro Shop having these guns.

If a double gets damp and left together, often any water will stay between the foreend
and the barrels and therefore rust here. Then if reblued, the barrels are sanded back
to take away any rust but the pits stay and the blue goes over the top. Nothing serious
as long as they aren't deep. It can happen very quickly if in tropical climates.

Was the Jeffrey 375 Flanged Magnum ?

Interesting you say made in the 60's and well used in Africa. I thought alot
of the hunting had died out in Africa by the 60's ?

What were the bores like in the Jeffrey ?

Colorado:

Did the salesman tell you that the .375 was a Jeffery? I assume that he also gave you the 1960 date? Sounds like these guys may be making this stuff up as they go along.

It isn't a Jeffery - they don't know what it is. The guy I talked to said there is no legible maker's name anywhere on it. No name on the action and that on the barrels was buffed out when they were improperly refinished. The gun has Birmingham 1925 rule proof marks (which means it was proved between 1925 and 1954) and has a serial number of 5258, which isn't a W. J. Jeffery number from that period. From the portion of the barrel inscription that survives, it was built for an Indian retailer and sold to an Indian noble, so it is probably pre-WWII. Proof marks are for Flanged Magnum.

Sounds like $12999 is a stretch.
