500 Nitro-hammer of Thor- pics
      #42382 - 25/11/05 10:55 PM

Just got back from a week in NT buff hunting.A week of mixed fortune.Hot as hell and as humid as a sauna.
First outing with the 500 Nitro double.
First buff ran several kilometers with a few 570 gn Woods.in place-finished up soon enough but messy.
Projectile tests on dead bull showed good mushrooming on a chest shot with a soft-but not complete penetration.Solid whistled through both shoulders.
Next bull copped a 570 soft in the shoulder, went down then regained his footing and went to bolt.
At this point I was tired of pissing around and (despite the PH's reservations) opened up with Wood. solids. They struck like the Hammer of Thor! The next shot hit the bull VERY hard, the next dropped him like a rabbit hit with a 222.Unfortunately another very large bull wheeled around behind the target animal and a solid that had gone through both shoulders of bull number one penetrated bull number two breaking the nearest rib, traversing the chest, breaking but not penetrating the far rib.Projectile was found the next day during the autopsy looking in perfect condition except for the rifling marks. Both animals died within 60 seconds of the shooting stopping, about 20 yards apart. You would have to have seen it to believe it!
Animal weights as estimated by PH at the end of this incident-buff one 650kgs,buff two 850 kgs.
Final impression-with the 500 on big animals use solids, the Wood. soft are too soft but the solids are great.
Softs are for limp dicks in this diameter rifle.
But be prepared for the extra trophy fee sting.
Will post pics of projectile ASAP.
In the mean time here are the two buffs after being dragged together with the 'cruiser.

Wombat,

Thank you for the report. I have never experienced these types of problems with the 570 gr Woodleigh softs. I don't shot a 500 NE though I use a 500 Jeffery Improved (aka 500 AHR). I have never recovered a 570 soft point shot into the chest cavity of a buffalo, as they have all passed completely through leaving a very nice 76mm to 125 mm entrance and exit holes in the rib cage. I have recovered many from head on head shots, the bullets take a beating then and only retain about 50% to 65% of their original weight.

My load has a muzzle velocity of 2440 fps.

Anyway, like I said thank you for the report. I believe I will shift to the 600gr PPSP for my future loading (once I exhaust the 60 or so rounds of 570gr SP I currently have). I would only use solids if the law mandated it, personal idiosyncracy only.

Scott

Wombat - congrats on the buff.
: BTW - what were the particulars on the .338? Were they solids or "X" and how'd they perform Please. Any ballistics as in initial velocity would be nice as well.
: My present .375/06IMP matches pretty closely, what factory .338 WM provides, for bullet weight vs. velocity, so I'll no doubt find the info quite interesting.

Wombat

Congratulations on your new .500 NE Searcy and also on the "testing" buffalo hunt!

The photos of two buffalo always look good.

Your mate did well too.

Better you than me hunting in mid-November. Was it raining much yet?

I have heard rumors that Aussie Buff's are tougher then Cape Buff. Any truth to this?

Thanks for the feedback.
As a general answer-
temp was around 35 C (95 F),we were hit by episodes of
tropical storms but generally sunny days-very humid.
The 338 Win is a rifle my mate Peter has owned for many years. It is a standard push feed Mod 70,firing PMC
factory 225 Blue covered Barnes (?XLC).The rifle allways
gives a good account of itself-no,it was not a one shot kill but neither were any of mine with the 500 Nitro.
A commonly held view is that our buff a little less savage than Cape buff but on average larger and tend to be a bit more solidly constructed.Peter & his rifle took a Cape buff in the Zambezi Valley in 1991.

Wombat,

Lovely pics. Would you please post pictures of your rifle whenever you have time? Sounds like a very beautiful gun.

Best wishes and good hunting!

In reply to:

Funny you should say that, Wombat, having apparently just experienced first-hand the main problem with using solids on herd-animals. There are a great many Northern Territory locals, myself included, who routinely kill big buffalo bulls with Woodleigh softs without incident: have been for decades. I've personally never needed to fire a solid at a buff, but sometimes carry them in case an opportunity should arise.
It never does!

Congrats on your trophy bulls though, mate. Sure, its hot at the moment, bloody hot, but October/November is my favourite time of year for hunting in Australia's Top End. Planned your next trip yet?
