I have a Cogswell & Harrison 450-400 2-3/8" BPE that has some missing finish in places on the buttstock and forend. Anyone have suggestions as to what to use to protect the bare spots and still keep the original finish?
Also, the buttplate is horn and it has some cracks forming along the edges and also some small holes in the buttplate surface. Some suggestions for restoring the buttplate would be useful, too. Thanks for any help.

It depends if it is oil finish or laquered type finish.
If oil finish you should be able to redo it but you may have to take it back a small amount so it desn't become patchy.
How do you know it's the original finish ? Alot of English guns were refurbished every year or so and alot of guns people think are original, aren't.
Re the "small holes" - they could be borer holes which means you should check the stock to make sure it is sound inside and not hollowed out by the pesky critters.
May need to be careful the buttplate doesn't fall apart if you take it off - they tend to be delicate / brittle.
No idea how to restoring - you can get new ones made from horn.

You're right...I'm not sure what type of finish is on the stock. There's quite a bit of it left but, naturally, there are missing spots and wear places.
I've had the buttplate off and the stock is sound. The holes showed up after hunting in the rain with it so I assume they have been there a long time. I was thinking of using AccuGlass to fill the holes and cracks and then smoothing it down to the actual surface. It's tough as nails and blends well with dark colors.

If it is oil, you can roughen the surface a bit with 0000 steel wool and apply either linseed oil or a better idea would be Tru-Oil. It is 5 times more effective against moisture intrusion.

I've used Tru-oil in the past and find it to be a good, durable finish. If I can figure out what the current finish is, I will probably use it for light touch up. I want to keep the wood in as good a shape as possible. Nice old rifle.
