I see listed for the Thompson
Center a 405 Winchester,& a
45-70 barrel. I would opt
for the 45-70. Also listed
was 416 Rigby. No thank you.

Let us know how that works out.
Will you be using reduced loads?

TC's are hard to get here in OZ, but seem to me to be the ideal handi rifle for travel. I'll have to wait until I get to the USA to pick one up with a combination of barrels, maybe next year when i go for Black Bear.

cheers

I've got an Encore (pistol) in .416 Rigby. I've shot a couple boxes of Federal Safari Loads through it.....it's not to bad. You can taste gun powder for a couple days, but other than that its OK.

I noticed a new barrel in 500 S&W.
Mini 500 nitro? 500 grn. @ 1425
from a pistol barrel. The barrel
for the Encore is a 26".

went out and shot the 416 encore 24" barrel with muzzle brake.was shooting 100 gr reloader 22, fed primer,350 gr speer mag tip.
i was sighting in at 50 yds to sight in the scope.after getting it zero in at 50 yd"s i shot a 3 shot group all in one hole.next time i go out will work at 100 yd"s and see what it will do.

Did you shoot it from the bench or sticks?
How would you describe the recoil. A recoil
reducer would make a difference. A 450 NE is
what I had in mind. I know I said no thank
you to the 416; but the idea of the 500 or the
458 seems to be worth it.

the first shot was standing then the rest was from a bench.
i would say recoil is like a 12 ga shotgun shooting slugs but i was also wearing a past recoil pad and that helped out alot.it is a fun gun to shoot and the barrel i got from cabelas i think i paid 224.00 for it.

Re: 460 Weatherby Encore [Re: k80]

Speaking of big bore encores, I have an encore chambered in 460 Weatherby. The first time I fired it,with full house loads, the 12" barrel ripped off the frame and landed 35 feet in front of me.The case ruptured and the head landed 75' behind me. I was told by the custom maker that the gun could handle this kind of power. I recieved a cut finger ligament on back of trigger finger, and a broken bone in my shooting wrist. After I sent it back to get it fixed, with heavier welds on frame I shot it twice more. It stayed together, but kicked like hell. Recoil was straight back horizontally, not much, verticle rotation. You can handle the recoil as long as the gun stays together,no injuries with second two shots, but it still hurt to shoot. Approximately 4800 ft.lbs of energy at muzzle ! Arizona custom handgun maker is no longer making an encore in this caliber. So be careful when pushing the power limits on an encore.

I have gotten several guns from J D Jones over the past several years. He does alot more testing than the maker of my 460 encore. When Itold him what had happened, he said,"who is the stupid idiot that made that gun in the first place." He also advised me that my 15" 30-378 encore is too high pressure also and it was only a matter of time before the barrel flyes off of it too. It does not have the recoil of the 460 encore, but it is still a screamer with factory loads. I have to confess that after my discussion with J D , I don't shoot it a bunch, probably only 20 times in the last year. I still like both guns because they still look pretty cool. Hell, we all have a little bit of certified gun nut in us, right?
