Leopard kills seven people in India
From correspondents in Ahmadabad, India
20sep03

A LEOPARD has mauled to death at least seven people in western India in the past month, prompting officials to call in hunters to kill it.

The leopard's latest victims were a woman and child, killed in their sleep in Dhanpur, a village 200 kilometres east of Ahmadabad, Gujarat state's financial hub, state conservator HS Singh said today.
"The animal is now entering huts and carrying away its prey," Singh said. "This is very dangerous and shoot-at-sight orders have been given to avoid further damage."

Wildlife wardens laid out at least 10 traps, but the animal has evaded them. Singh said two sharpshooters have arrived to find the leopard and kill it.

Environmentalists say shrinking habitats have forced leopards out of forests in search of food, leading to attacks.

Since 1995, leopards have killed 37 people and injured another 652 in Gujarat state, officials said. Gujarat state has nearly 1000 leopards.

"Killing this man-eater is necessary for the sake of the leopard population in the region. If villagers develop a hatred toward leopards, they may even poison water holes and carcasses, which can kill innocent leopards," said Rohit Vyas, a wildlife warden.

Nothing new under the sun, is there.

How many did the Rudraprayag (sp?) leopard tally before Jim Corbett taught it better table manners?

Regards....... Cooch

There are more attacks from nearby and in the Indian parks where tiger and leopard still live than we ever hear about. Not surprising considering the encroachment on the parks for cutting firewood, poaching, cropping inside etc. Plus I don't think the cats know the meaning of an unfenched boundary.

Near another park I read once of the villagers wearing "face-masks" on the back of their heads. As anyone who has read Corbett will know, Corbett discussed that tiger especially will usually only attack upwind, thinking humans will scent them as deer or antelope would. Also they will usually attack from ambush or behind, thus the wearing of a face mask on the rear of the head to confuse the cats and hopefully prevent an attack. Examples of modern "Janus"'.

I have an older news article which I found this week of a lion maneater from Malawi. Will post it.

Yes in the Sunderbans a tidal area of India they pioneered the use of face masks worn on the back of the head in conjunction with human dummies that gave an electric shock to the pouncing tiger which has resulted in a dramatic drop in human kills.
I have seen film of a tiger attacking a dummy and getting a shock...boy didnt that make him roar hahahah and was he pissed off too hahahaaaaaaa

Found my reference....

The Rudraprayag Leopard is officially credited with 125 confirmed victims, although there are known kills that did not make the official tally..The Panar Leopard tallied somewhere around 400 confirmed kills. Both of them collected by Jim Corbett.

A couple of others are known to have reached somewhere around the century mark.
