Anyone go to the Reno show?
      #42144 - 22/11/05 01:06 PM

My wife pried me away from house chores to get me to drive us out to the Reno show on Sunday.
The drive was nice and some of the guns at the show were interesting to see.

I heard I missed handling the 700 nitro by a day (or was that a few hours, I can't remember quite...)

I really didn't see much double rifle selection there.
Did you guys get there on Friday and buy all the good ones?

Like all 700's, it was too heavy. My 470 was there, but no buyer was there for it so it is still available.

By the way, it is the second best show in the West. Lots of nice double shotguns and the usual Colts & Winchesters. It is a REAL gunshow with no Beanie Babies. It is held 3 times a year.

Peter-

Tell me where your .470 was.
I don't think I saw a .470 there.
What *is* your .470?

I'm looking for a BPE rifle or a black powder bore gun.
I'm not so much in the market for a DG rifle.
Back actions and damascus tubes, please.

But for the sake of asking...

Whatchya got?

So did you leave that with Tyler, or where in the show was it?

I just don't recall seeing a Searcy there.

It was cased and on my table in the main room near the end of the very first interior row across from the taxidermist.

Tyler had tons of interesting stuff.

I was on the hunt for a decent BPE jones gun with damascus tubes, didn't see anything that stirred my interest much in that realm.

Can't be sure, but I think it was him who had a particularly distinctive 700 Nitro...

I stopped by his little speck of space (!) to rib him a bit and pressed forth in search of late 19th century stuff.

The 700 was front and center at the entrance from the lobby to the side room.

That was Tyler's table.
I just missed seeing that rifle, Tyler greeted me with that information.
No big deal though. It would have been interesting in a grotesque and excessive kind of fashion.

How much are you looking to get out of your .470?
Have you advertised it anywhere?
Seems a two barrel set cased Butch rifle should be pretty easy to sell...

I once saw a 2 Ga double at the Vegas show. It was 35 pounds and I think an H&H.

Mine is a neat 470 with extra set of 12 Ga barrels. Exhibition wood I supplied (I am a wood dealer). Upgraded engraving with an $800 display case/travel case. It is $14,800 and will go up a bit after the first of the year as Butch's goes up too. I think I put it on the classifieds on this site with a photo if I remember right.

That doesn't sound so bad Peter-

Perhaps if you get the word out more, it'll sell sooner than later.

Why are you letting it go?
Sounds like a good combination for someone who wants a good quality DGR/shotgun kit.

Funny about the show, might just have been my columnated vision and specific interest in a decent user damascus Jones BPE gun, but I don't really recall seeing much there.

Did you get around the show much?
See anything that got your attention?

I am a lover of fine shotguns, and saw many there. A couple London sleeved caught my fancy along with a fwt Lindner I once owned but no trade was worked out. I did buy a neat little rifle. It is a Sako .223 with a Lawson stock. For those unfamiliar with Lawson, it is a space age looking thing far more California sporter like than anything from California. However, it was designed to be a comfortable shooter and very much is. The wood is exhibition myrtle with magnificent black streaks and strong fiddleback. A thing of beauty.

I am a wood suppliuer to Butch and did a trade and will probably do more in the future. For now, I need to fancy up my ranch in preparation to sell it. It should bring a million or more in a couple years which is my retirement money. I plan on a place on a coastal river for Summer and Fall then sno-bird it somewhere warm.

Good for you Peter!

Sounds like a good plan. I wish you the best on moving your property sale along. What part of the state are you in?

I like shotguns too, but really for the most part my interest is in the early days of cartridge development. My favorite shotgun is a breech-loading percussion gun. It would seem to be from the late 1820's It likely took paper or skin cartridges and percussion caps. There are keys in the breechfaces which may well have taken a pair of rifle tubes. The engraving scenes are delicate and very crafty, very high grade game scenes wich show excellent control of depth of field, the metal still shows case colors. The gun's an underlever design where the triggerguard and tang are the action lever, much like the Beringer pinfire gun shown at some of the concours events (by *I think* Roger Sanger)

Looks like this one, but mine is a percussion gun, isn't silver on the metal, and has much prettier engraving. Also the barrels on my gun are Damascus, colored in a bloody liver brown, the wood's goregeous.

Although there were truckloads of high-grade british and european guns in centerfire there, much to drool over in that respect, I didn't see much very high grade pinfire or percussion equipment in decent shape-- actually, there was a twenty bore flinter SxS that I refused to handle fearing it'd be as well balanced as I'd suspected. That particular gun was an exception. I didn't even bother asking the price. What a beauty!

Lots of nice bolt guns too, but bolt guns don't really do it for me.

Have fun with the ranch detail. Looks like the state might get some rain in the coming days. Could be good, could be a pain in the ass for the work you have coming. I'll wish the best for you.
