Wild Boar Hunting in the USA
      #41858 - 18/11/05 06:27 AM

Gents,

I am interested in wild boar hunting/shooting in the USA, specificly driven or stalked. I want to be able to feel the thrill of a "dagerous" game without haveing to go to Africa ($$$$$). I've found a place in my native SC that is $1000.00 for two pigs driven by dogs. I know some of you do this every year and I should be able to join you this year.

Bonanza,
I just was on a hunt last week. We were 12 guys in total. We hunted a preserve, all the boar were hunted stalked.
We took a total of 7 boar, a buch of Whitetail and assorted other animals. The price was about the same. It was a blast. This place is on the PA. MD. border. If you have any interest LMK.

If you want the "dangerous game" feeling you might want to look into a knife hunt with dogs -- that would get you up close and personal. Most of the time the ones I see will run if they see, hear or smell you. Not that I do not enjoy hunting them.

I know of some people in Texas and Hawaii that hunt this way, and there are probably many, many others of which I am not aware.

NE450No2 has killed a lot more boars than I have and may have a better perspective on the dangerous game aspects.

Do you have some pictures you can post? Did you use a double? It sounds like you had a great time.

I hunted with a double 7x65R. I wasn't looking for a boar. I shot two deer. My son took a boar with a .308. A friend took one with a 45-70 TC hand cannon. It was a great time.
I have a ton of pictures I could post, I was trying to figure out where to put them, in double guns or hunting in America.

Alan,
What a great time it would be to come over to Aussie and hunt wild pigs. Unfortunately sometimes time (mostly) and money prohibit it. A canned hunt is certainly not a real fair chase hunt. But it's the closest thing we can get to given where we live, our time to hunt and amount of money spent.
Having said all that this hunt on the preserve with my son, future son in law and other buddies as well was the most fun you could have with your clothes on.

There are also a few hard core types in Texas who catch them alive and take them home to fatten them up before slaughtering them. I've never witnessed this myself but I think I'll stick to shooting them...

untill you've tried it, most people don't realize that wild hogs can run several miles ahead of dogs. did it some in the early 90's and is a great test of endurance. not all chases are marathons but a big boar will test anyone. we usually had a .44 or .45 for back-up. BTW, good site and a big Texas howdy! Kurt.

Kweber,

Let me be the first you welcome you to NitroExpress! This is “the” forum as far as I am concerned. You are now in the company of true Gentleman and very few scoundrels. We love big bore firearms, double rifles and Safari. We even met up sometimes for shooting and hunting. Beware, however – you marriage, job and life saving are severely in jeopardy if you continue on this site. That was a “and” not an “or!

Bonanza

I think hunting wild boar or pigs anywhere is one of life's hunting pleasures. Go for it!

I've been on one of those but it was a slow day. The dogs only caught one sow and she was tied up and taken for a ride in the truck. She did not like being put in the back with the dogs.

I passed the Hondo exit off I-35 Friday and today on the way to and from South Texas. Good to see you here. Our hogs are hiding from me so far but I think I may have a line on where they are. The dry weather we had has moved them from where I found them last year.

For what its worth from a 'new guy', I hunted wild boar on a preserve in PA about 8 years ago. I used a TC Contender in 44mag. My big mistake was believing all the 'hype' about Black Talon ammo being so devestating. I bought the last box my dealer had after Winchester stopped selling them with that name.

I should have stuck with a good heavy solid. It took four hits to drop my 300lb boar, and a fifth one for the kill. I'll admit the first shot could have been better and fifty yards may have been a bit far; as it hit in front of the shoulder. The others were well placed; but by then I had an angry Hog on my hands.

When my Hog was down, I accompanied my buddy, who was bow hunting. After he got a hit we started tracking the blood trail. Eventually the boar charged. He had a choice between my young thin friend, and my well-fed self, I was down to my last round and backed up against a dead fall.
When he came it was all instinct and no sights; but at only a couple feet the .44 hit him like the "Hand of God!"

No it wasn't Africa, and a Wild Boar is not a angry Buff; but that was and exciting hunt, and alot of good pork.
