deer hunt
      #4103 - 02/09/03 02:39 PM

Talk about a low front we had it all rain, snow and hail too for 9 days( one dry day only) but of course i wouldnt miss it for quids.
I personally saw 14 deer and feel very comfortable telling you that i didnt see the same deer twice as we hunted quite a few systems.
I saw three stags of which one was a soda but i left him as he was too small after having a good look at him, though my mate from Tas took him a couple of days later with his 300 winny, second stag i saw came thru in front of a hind and calf this stag was about 24" and he got past me as he had seen me as i stood up after doing the nature calls now thing,i had a fair look as he jumped the track and was happy he wasnt a big bastard, the hind stopped so i took the calf and let her go.Four systems walk from camp i came into a gully full of red hot white gum rubs so commenced trying to nut the stag out and after criss crossing for an hour or two he jumped out of the berries below me and i only saw one antler of a minimum 28" though he could go to 30 "....dont know if there only was one but it seems strange that i didnt see two as i looked down on him going down and across the hill,he was only 80 yards or so but he beat me fair and square till we hunt him next time,i had it planned for the next day but the rain came down harder and was too much to walk into the stags gully so far away, all in all a good trip except for the rain but of course that comes with the job of sambar hunting.I will post a pic when developed.JG

G'day Gryphon, You sure had a top time mate, nice area you were in with that many Sambar around, I just got back from a week up the Wonnangatta/Moroka area and the same again saw several deer and out of the 3 stags we saw there was one ripper at least going 28" which I was glassing accross the gully some 400mtrs away, but with the amount of tucker around they were staying up very high, too high for my old legs, but with 80kg of prime Sambar meat in my freezer I'm one happy hunter. Time you move back down to Vic Gryphon you must miss the high country heaps....Les

Hi Gryphon, Yeah must have been a look alike mate, the Tassie deer stalkers are pretty keen, the two guys I just went with are from Devonport in Tassie (Tassie ADA members)come over once or twice a year, it's the first time I ever hunted with them but I had known Ken for a few years and it turned out to be a bloody top trip and a belly full of laugh's, the only thing missing was the bango thank christ, bit hard 2 on 1 but I kept the mainland side of things up...anyway we are planning another trip when the gates open, can't wait...take it easy....Les

G'day Gryphon, You would have been right about 6 mths ago mate, we had a small cattle raising farm up in Kialla not far from Shepparton but with our grown up kids living in Melbourne and my wife by herself and trying to look after the place while I'm away working (bosun in the Merchant navy) we decided to make the big move to Melbourne, it's taken awhile to settle down and it's not too bad plenty of gun shops and the Sambar are only a couple or so hours away, and working 28 days on, with 28 days off, I've got plenty of time to plod around my favorite hunting areas...and now with plenty of Sambar venison in the freezer after taking a meat doe last trip , I'm after that big one mate and I tell you something if you remember Gryphon when I took Big John up for that trip and put that bloody nice stag up for him I never saw that stag again in the 3 or 4 trip when I went looking for him, I had visited that stag many times before and just watched him and realy never wanted to shoot it.I hope it's still around though. I'm still in contact with John and me and the misses are heading over to pommie land to stay with him and his misses in May next year and he has set up a Roe and Red Stag hunt and some pigeon shootng for us, can't bloody well wait for that. That beer will always beer waiting for ya Gryphon..Les

Know alan wilson ? he`s is /was in the merch navy and he hunted with us back in the `80`s hounding deer.

Gryphon

Seeing 14 deer in 9 days. Sounds like you got a look at a fair number in a short time. Great stuff. Are they concentrated at all because of the burnt country?

Absolutely no burn near us at all,we put in many hard miles of walking/hunting and i reckon for the amount of miles covered we didnt see that many hahaa.
Put in the hard yards and reap the benefits for sure John

G'day Gryphon, I'm in Malvern East mate, I know what you are saying about the big smoke thing, but we plan to move back to the bush when I retire in 4 yrs, up around the Jameison/Mansfield area we hope. I've heard there is a fairly good population of Sambar near Melbourne up around Mt Dis. Heard alot of stalkers get up there, I was only speaking to a bloke the other day about deer and he is always running into them near Gembrook while riding their trail bikes but the area is a no-go for hunters, anyway I'm heading back to bloody work in a few days and back in time for the gates to open yeah...Les

Yeah that was the story he wrote about with me,( Mt Terrible and Second creek) the stag mount was in the Lakeside pub Jamieson, an Otto Ruf mount out of the local area, bloody top brew there mate but if you get stuck into it the next morning you wished you had stuck to VB. After several days hard yakkar in the bush that joint puts on a bloody top night of drinking piss and bull shitting, I just love it, the locals are nutters but we all mix in. I've only been told once there to go and get fucked, when some bloke invited me to come and shoot all the "vermin deer" on his property only a few mins from Jameison and when his misses found out, she came and told me where to go..she was ok as she had big tits hahaha.and that's where my eyes were hahaha..fuck she had big nipples...sorry about the lingo mate I'm half pissed... take it easy...Les

SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD NIGHT YOU HAD THERE LES HAHA

Yep the Jammy area has always had plenty of deer,(and hunters) and it has been a good area for us for the past 20 plus years including the lake as well, hard country but there are some good `uns in there still.

From your comments, this sounds like it was quite literal!
