NSW considers feral animal hunt
      #41025 - 08/11/05 11:43 PM

Hunters may soon be allowed to kill feral animals in some state forests across New South Wales, as part of an ongoing campaign to clear introduced animals from Australia.

The state Government is considering giving licensed hunters access to thousands of hectares of land in the forests as a way to control big populations of feral animals.

Craig Henderson, of the New South Wales Game Council, says native animals would still be protected.

He says the plan would be introduced in a responsible manner.

"Hunting is only available to those people who hold a restricted game hunting licence and, in order to get a restricted game hunting licence, you must be a member of an approved hunting organisation and you must have completed appropriate hunter education," he said.

"In general, hunters want to do the right thing and they'll help out with feral animal control for all the species."

Greens take aim at forest hunting worries
The Greens are concerned that people could be accidentally shot if hunters are allowed to kill feral animals in New South Wales' State Forests.

The Victorian Government is considering giving licensed hunters access to thousands of hectares of land in the forests as a way to control big populations of feral animals.

The New South Wales Game Council wants the plan introduced in March.

But NSW north coast Greens' MLC Ian Cohen thinks it is extremely dangerous.

"Well, certainly the Greens are keen to see appropriate feral animal control, but opening up State Forests does leave it open to some real issues, particularly in terms of other members of the public recreating in the State Forests and being able to control hunters armed with guns moving through these areas," he said.

"I don't think we're going to be able to see those lands appropriately closed off to make it absolutely safe."
