Blaser S2 - Brief review
      #40515 - 03/11/05 09:47 PM

Guys,

I had a quick look at the Blaser SxS today.

It was a 6.5 / 20Gauge. Double Rifles are not in yet
but it gave me a very good indication.

Overall impression - I liked it.
Light (felt a bit like a Chapuis in weight and feel)
nicely balanced, fit and finish good.
Gun "came up" VERY well and I was looking
straight down the sights - not something I do all
that often with double rifles.

A DR in anything up to 9.3 would feel the same.
I would like to see bigger calibres than this (ie 470)
to see how they balanced and felt in the hand.

From the questions and comments posted by others.
(I have shortened some to just the main component of the query)

Rubber between the barrels ? - it is quite hard and looks OK to me.
The rib with the sights on is solid metal. As to how it is put together
I wouldn't know but I can't see a problem with the system

funky locking mechanism? - see Cocking / Decocking system below

And then what about the huge overall size of the rifle?
WHAT Huge over all size of the rifle ??? I am not sure
what the poster who put this question up was referring to.

How about the bands around the muzzles?
The band around the muzzles holds the 3 screws
for adjustment and the screws that move the barrel.
Looks fine to me and is probably well thought out.

3 very small Hex screws ?
I can't see how you could use much bigger Hex Screws

And the clunky stock?
What clunky stock ? - I thought the stock was
well shaped.

Roof over the action
The gun uses a Tilting Block mechanism (on the back / rear of the
action.) The roof over the action covers this so it does actually
have some functionality.

Will the "Roof over the action" affect reloading
For someone new to DR's, I don't see it as a big problem.
For those used to English and new DR's, a slight modification
to loading style may be needed but I'd need to do a quick R, L
followed by a reload to give you an honest opinion.
For a Non DGDR, I don't see it being a problem.

Cocking / Decocking system
Seem very similar to the Krieghoff.
One thing is that if you open the gun, it decocks
itself and then after gun is closed you have to recock
the gun by pushing the button forward. The button
is well shaped and easy to use but the distance you
have to push it may be a bit long IMHO.

I will have to try it when shooting it to know more.

Anyway, these are my initial thoughts. I'll repost when
I have seen the SxS DR.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your review 500Nitro.

Questions:

6.5mm - Which 6.5mm?

In reply to:

We have been told that if the action is cocked when opened, it uncocks when opened but re-cocks when closed.

Am I correct in reading, you are saying this is not so ie that the rifle must be re-cocked every time it is opened and closed?

Looking forward to your future review.

Thanks.

I like the stock, too, but the cocking system sucks rear tit, especially for dangerous game. I was told it was required to keep weight down in the 10-10 1/2 pound range for the 470 size cartridges. However, my Searcy 470 weighs 9 1/2 pounds so their comment is only self-serving.

6.5 ? Not sure - I will check the brochure and see what they offer.
(I can't seem to find the brochure but that's not surprising considering
it's 4.00am !!!)

Cocking / DeCocking

NitroX quote - "We have been told that if the action is cocked when opened, it uncocks when opened but
re-cocks when closed. Am I correct in reading, you are saying this is not so ie that the rifle must be re-cocked

From memory as I did ask the question and then try it, I am pretty sure the rifle must be re-cocked
every time it is closed ?" ie it decocks itself on opening and you have to recock it when closed.

For DG, not what I personally would want as I know just how fast you have to reload
and it's one more thing to do - same reason I disconnect Automatic safeties.

I DO NOT want the above to be a definitive statement on the Cocking / DeCocking
mechanism until I have checked.

Re future Brief review, Yes, I can't wait to see the 9.3 / 375H&H Doubles and a 470.

ENGRAVING - The gun I looked at had sideplates with lots of engraving - looked OK
to me, better than Merkel's enrgaving (finer scroll, more detailed) but engraving is much
easier to comment on when you have 2 - 3 guns of the same maker next to each other.

When the S2 is opened it decocks. In regard to the "roof over the action" It takes some getting used to be I can load, unload, and reload it as quicly as the Chapuis

Ratel

Thanks for the clarification on the decock.

I agree with your comments re the roof over the action
- IMHO it would be easy to get used to and wouldn't
worry me.

Would I buy one ? I'll let you know after I have felt a
375/9.3 and a 470.

I believe the "engraving" is roll engraving on the lower grade S-2's. Doesn't look bad, but doesn't look good either.

I shot my S2 on the range today with several loads at 100 yds. I found that the gun shoots extremely well but is a bit ammo sensitive. I first shot a group with the last of the Norma solids. 4 shots 2"x2" on the nose. I also shot my R93 to check accuracy and the Norma solid placed 3 shots in about 3/4". I then shot the Remington Swift A frame out of both guns. The S2 and the R93 did not shoot this load very well. The S2 was about 5"x5" for 4 shots, the R93 was about 1 1/2" for 3 shots. I then shot some Lost River 300 grs J36 bullets loaded at 2550 fps. WOW! I placed 3 shots in a ragged hole, the 4th I pulled a bit. The R93 placed 3 shots in a ragged hole too. I did not have a chance to finish shooting all the ammo I wanted to try, I have the TBBC and the Nosler Partitions to shoot also, along with a supply of Kynoch in transit.
My intial impression is I like the gun very much. While some say the gun has an awkward feel, I found the gun very pleasant to shoot and handle. I am very anxious to keep shooting the S2.

Here are some groups from the range yesterday with the S2. I need to do more shooting with it for sure. I think the Jensen bullet is alot like the Sierra, very fragile, good for small game
