SOLD: Whitworth in 375 Sold but 458 Stock avail.
      #40126 - 30/10/05 11:50 PM

I am seriously considering selling two Whitworth Express rifles, one in 375 and one in 458. The 375 is in new condition and the 458 is in excellent + condition. The 458 has three elephant ivory inlays (diamond shaped), one on the butt and two on the action area. Simple and tastefully done. What would be fair market value for each? I'm not interested in getting the highest possible price, I just want a fair price and move them quickly once they are on the market. I live in the Washington D.C. area.

It depends on time of year and where you live. In my neck of the jungle 600+/-50USD.

Pablo's right about the .458. With the .375 in new condition, maybe another $50. I own one that has been somewhat customized and if I had to spend the rest of my life with one rifle, that would be it. Quite desirable, Whitworths.

I also own a Whitworth in .375 H&H and agree that they are indeed well made, and worth every penny. I do have a question though. Since they are so well made, and desireable, why do Winchester Mod. 70s command a higher price, especially since their quality has gone down hill in the last couple of years?

I think it comes down to Brand recognition
and younger peple know don't do the research
on the backgrounds like they did in the past
(ie Reading books).

The old Parker Hale falls into the same category.
They are both well built, strong Mauser 98's.

The same respect and maybe price difference applies
to Brno 602's and CZ550's.

Those who know what they are buy them.

Just my HO.

Bang on, 500! That's my take exactly. Younger shooters doing any research will go to books by writers in The Golden Age, like O'Connor and Keith, who extoled the virtues of the pre-64 Winchesters. No one of any prominence wrote or yet writes of the Whitworth. You have to be a crawler through the labyrinthine passages of NE, AR and the like to get a feel of the passion that Whitworth owners have for their tools. In many ways, most of them selfish, I think that's a good thing. Leaves more for the rest of us at lower prices!

Oldsarge

Without being critical, you only have to look at some of
the questions on the forums (this and others) about BASIC
load data for certain calibres - all of which is in most reloading
manuals by Speer, Hornady, Sierra etc and often available
very easily on the net within 10 minutes.

I was actually going to put up a post about this whole thing
research and is it that people are lazy or they don't know where
to START looking) but decided against it.

Your thoughts ?

I agree - let them stay uneducated and leave more the rest of us.

I just may be interested in your 458 if the timing is right. Hopefully you'll make a decision before the Holidays. If during the Holidays, the money is already spent on gifts and such. If it's doable, please PM me. Thanks.

Have too many 375s, if that's possible, and one is an Interarms MK X Alaskan...Whitworth wannabee. But, I AM interested in the 458. Please let me know the particulars.
