Searcy barrel lengths

Well, after reading previous posts on double rifles, I've decided to go with a Searcy. I plan on ordering a PH 500 NE with 26 inch barrels, but have a few questions.

1) Is there an extra charge for custom barrel lengths?
2) What are the pros and cons of having 26 inch barrels?

The reason I want 26 inch barrels, is because I really like how the DR looks with the longer tubes.

The longer they are the greater the weight and more barrel heavy it would be. Pac-Nor makes the barrels (shotgun barrels, too) and they are available in up to 28" but wouldn't suggest this long.

JPeterson:

It's your rifle. You're getting it made specifically for yourself and for your ENJOYMENT. By all means, get what you want.

What did Butch say about the length?

Added or shortened barrel lengths can throw off the balance and feel of the gun - get Butch's input. He WON'T steer you wrong.

JPeterson, I believe there is a ser charge for barrels over 24", but I doubt it is much! I too prefere the 26" tubes on a double. Most of the load data is worked up with 26" tubes. Butches' standard length is 24" Give him a call!

Thanks for the input guys!

Besides the looks and handling of the rifle, does the extra barrel lenght offer any other advantages e.g. added velocity, less sensitivity to load selection, improved accuracy.

Any info is greatly appreciated

Not to forget that a double is a "close in" weapon and shorter barrels make for easier (ie: quicker) handling and are always prefered in dense brush and tall grass when doing follow up. Please talk to Butch and if possible handle some doubles. You might want longer tubes that 24'', but I wouldn't. Think about having to stop a buff at 8 feet, would another 50FPS make any difference, or getting the gun up and pointed at the place where you MUST shoot him be more important? A lot of the PHs used (or use) barrels as short as 20 inches (or shorter) on their guns. Thats about the same (forward length) as 24's on a double.

I would get 22" or 24" barrels.

Barrel length may be shrugged off as merely a personal preference, but the shooter's build may force overall gun-length to be considered a safety issue. Two of my mates prefer long barrels on their doubles, they are both tall with long arms, and can place the palm of the forward hand over the muzzles of my 24"-barrel Jeffery while mounted at the shoulder!!

Marraki,

I don't see how a long-armed guy has any more of a safety issue than a short armed guy. Generally I have enough muzzle awareness to not pull the trigger if my hand is in front of the muzzle.

I'll go one further than this as it is my pet hate.

I have enough muzzle awareness to not my hand is in
front of the muzzle AT ALL.
