what is the hitting power of the 338 lapua like and what sized game can be taken with it

Considering it primary design was to take out a terrorist through the window of a 747
and it goes through a 1/2" steel plate at 1000 yards, I would call it overkill.

Unless you want to shoot game at 600 + yards from a sitting bench rest
I would leave the 338 Lapua.

The guns I've handled are heavy and recoil at the high end of tolerance.

I think better cartridges are available.

Specs of 338 Lapua are in COTW and vrtually every Military mag going.

500 Nitro

PS - Plus if you want to travel OS with it you may start finding problems
caused solely by the calibre.

I own the 338 RUM witch has a little more power than the lapua. It is good for those big bears, Moose and long shots.

Isn't it a 416 Rigby case necked down to 338? I saw a very nice custom Dakota rifle at Lodi in 338 Lapua. The owner's other rifle was a custom 600 OK, so he must enjoy very big rifles.

It is a slightly shortened 416 Rigby and with a more sloping shoulder. Case capacity is about the same as the 338 Rem Ultra.
