I received this this morning, and I am as happy as a little boy.
Rifled barrel caliber 17,5mm and smooth one 16,5mm
Dated 1866 under the barrels. Maker Firmin, successeur de Caron, arquebusier de l'Empereur, Paris.

For everything that walked, swam or crawled on earth.

Is the "Cape gun" style gun common in France? What primarily was it used for? what sort of game?

Yes, it’s for a bayonet!
But it’s not common, a little more maybe towards the German border. But not at all from my home.. it is very recently that the hunters started using rifled weapons.
I think it is either a weapon of venery, or a weapon for the colonies in Africa.
Bombonnel, a very well-known panther hunter, used a Lefaucheux pinfire, Cape-gun style shotgun. He was shooting a mix of bullets and buckshot, with one hundred grains of black powder. It’s rather curious, but it was apparently effective.

Most often they are rifled, but it’s to further disperse the shot.
With a bayonet, here it's not a rifle to shoot small birds!

17.5 mm = .689" 16.5 mm = .650"
14 bore = .693" 16 Bore = .662"

I shoot .682" pure lead balls in my .69cal. Sporting Rifle with a 10 ounce (.021") denim patch.
I also shoot .675" and .662" balls, pure or hardened lead with 14 ounce (.034") denim patches. All patches for hunting patches are lubricated with pure Neetsfoot Oil(not compound) or a "mink oil" lubricant once sold by a store in the USA.
I suggest this SxS gun is a "Cape Gun" meant for both big game and birds. With a cylinder bore (no choke) barrel, there is no possible reason to want to further spread the shot, imho.

BEAUTIFUL GUN by the way. Such incredible shape. Yes, bayonet mount. Saw a picture/tin plate? of some blokes outside a cabin high in the mountains, hunting camp by the looks of it, wherein one of them had a SxS with a bayonet mounted. This picture would have been taken mid 1800's.

Unfortunately, the range report will have to wait a little. The hammer needs to be repaired. I will soon bring the rifle to my gunsmith, with the 10 gauge Lefaucheux and the Berleur flintlock.
