I thought I was buying a Stevens Grant 450-400 - great price - SURPRISE SURPRISE

Here is the link ... great British gun at a good price at only $3999 .... ($3500 with my Cabelas club points)

https://www.gunsinternational....cfm?gun_id=103408175

I was concerned if this was going to be the 450-400 smaller 2-3/8" case .. or the 450-400 larger 3-1/4" case ...

When I picked up the gun I took along a 3-1/4" case to test the chambers ...... THEY LITERALLY DISAPPEARED IN THE CHAMBERS ...

TURNS OUT ITS A 3" 500 CALIBER .....

Yes, that is nice. A friend's .500 BPE really shined on the range with a case full of BP and the 450Gr. Lyman .50/70 bullet, #515141.
This bullet:

Lee also makes this mould and would be less than 1/2 the price of a Lyman mould.
Lee's:

The 500gr. mould looks like it might be a good one for my Hammer air rifle.
I bought a .510" bullet sizer die from Lee and it works well on all my bullets casting larger than that.

Steven Grant! what a find. One of the best gunmakers of the time in my opinion. The engraving is spectacular.

There is a "39" stamped on the bottom of the barrels .... but there was a laminated tag attached to the trigger-guard from the former owner that said ..

"caliber 500 3" express"

and even had loading data with IMR3031 and IMR4198 with velocities - HERE ARE PICTURES OF THE TAG

Very nice rifle. Thanks for sharing it.

One thing I like about guns with honest wear to the checkering, like yours, is that generally they are shooters. People don't wear out poor shooting guns...they sit in the back of the safe or get sold on.

Let us know how it goes at the range.

Chris
