Newly acquired 1910 Mannlicher
      #395293 - 25/12/25 11:02 AM

I picked this 1910 Mannlicher off of Gunbroker for what I thought was a reasonable figure.

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/3DESZgTkTgSvOiDFRkO0Ig.V4VOcfkWG41L-aBVTsAaAC

It had some issues with the butt stock having been immersed in water for a period of time.

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/Pgcv_a0DSyyU7_4sq8D1Tw.Z8mdZHQ49ET5y82_l

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/dO_xFPnYShi-auvYOpDIBQ.4PT_1CG8nGjsQeQt84Duak

This caused the buttplate and rear sling swivel to be corroded as well as the original cleaning rod.

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/uBWaFsFNSI6A12EpazAAmA.CRfHxvS1UfKL-rEMriWLDR

Plus the stock has a professionally repaired crack through the wrist.

But despite of all this I took a chance and put the minimum bid and won.

Well I tried all the tricks to get the url to work as an image, but to no avail. Any ideas before I try the rest of the pictures?

At least clicking on the links shows the pics.
You have some enjoyable restoration ahead, especially on the buttstock but looks to have potential.
Hopefully it repays your efforts. The 1910s are wonderful medium-bore rifles and if this is your first, you are in for a treat.
Two of my friends also have this model and share my appreciation for the 9.5 MS.
Do you intend taking it afield?
Here's a link to an old report by way of encouragement!

I have done a restoration on the stock. I'll post more pictures soon. I have been fire forming brass and working with cast bullets. So far it seems likely that this will be my new feral hog gun to try and reduce the flourishing hog population here in South Alabama. I have a restored Marlin 1893 rifle in 38-55 that I have used in the past.

This 1910 has me a little puzzled. Both the receiver and the barrel are marked with "MADE IN AUSTRIA".

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/iiRN_jzCSmqF_fp5rMPOkw.j9oIZo8xuVFKgXW3I4QyBq

This is like an earlier posted 1910 that had been re-barreled to a 6.5 cartridge. The left of the receiver almost looks like it had been buffed.

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/mEEFyWKSTPSAUjZUIuUSsg.MeBtnzR6iip7Vo4CRfRswV

The Austrian proofs are for 1938.

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/PGyNnJKLTl-dbd9iZSB6Yg.rl4tmfJ_BMEP8XKag6C03b

Was the rifle returned to Steyr for re-barrel and refinish in 38? Another Austrian proof.

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/u4tPYFm0RKySgJ7o9uH-cw.pPazmKkQmTg_oaWIriTGVq

Then sometime after 1954 it was proofed in England.

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/0of7YKd3R8q4dM68Y11P9w.f7mDn5nXe88Rk3G3jgcm9o

Now its in the US so it has been around. The serial number at 10880 is fairly high and was definitely made after 1924, but the barrel marking is supposedly used only on separately installed re-barrels not factory installed. Comments?

As I said earlier I managed to remove almost all of the water stain on the butt stock. Here are before and after pictures of the right side of the complete rifle.

Here is the right side of the butt stock, before and after.

Now the left side, before and after.

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/vUNOLw29RqqeCcmCpThgGQ.TIeeaH9i2yJETbC29zPZ_S

I stripped the stock with a furniture stripper several times before using Oxalic acid on two separate occasions to remove probably 95% of the stain. I then used a stain conditioner on the whole stock to get a uniform color followed by a coat of a Provincial oil stain. I then put 6 light coats of TruOil finish and allowed the stock to dry for several days. Then used rubbing compound to take the gloss off and finished with Birchwood Casey Stock Sheen and Conditioner. The metal parts were wire brushed. The butt plate screws and sling swivel were treated with a rust remover while the butt plate itself was sanded with fine sandpaper. They were covered with three coats of Brownell's semi-gloss black Aluma Hyde ll and baked in the oven between coats. I an still considering what to do to the original cleaning rod to preserve and restore it.

The stock looks great. A far cry from what you started with.

Done a fantastic job of the stock mate!
Never knew about Oxalic acid as a bleaching agent or rust removal agent - cheers!
But how does she shoot for the 9.5x56MS?

I have a 260gr cast bullet loaded over 38 grains of surplus 4895 that has been shooting small groups at 50yds that I hope to test out this weekend on some local feral hogs. I know they will work fine if I do my part. I load the 265gr cast RCBS flat nose over 4895 in my Marlin 1893 rifle and have had great success with it on hogs.

As others have said, you now have a very nice 1910. Those are great rifles. I may try your load of 38 gr of 4895. I have used 4320.

Also your M93 Marlin looks like a nice rifle. I have always liked Marlins.

Nice hog. Are you hunting public of private land?

Build your cartridges _precisely_ to these dimensions, or as close as you can, for problem free feed through the Schoenauer magazine. OAL length is important, width of projectile about 2/3 forward of case is crucial. If you can locate any Hornady #3715 (270 grain RN), buy them.

I'd be interested in reading the result. I have used 42 grains 4895 in mine.

This 1910 has me a little puzzled. Both the receiver and the barrel are marked with "MADE IN AUSTRIA". The left of the receiver almost looks like it had been buffed.

Made In Austria was added to receivers of new production MS beginning sometime in 1924.

The Oesterr Waffenfabr Ges-Steyr (OWGS) stamping was changed to Steyr Werke AG during 1926.

Your proof marks look incomplete to me if pre WW2 Austrian. I suspect the receiver and barrel were proofed very early in the Anschluss period when the system changed as Hermann Goering was handed the management of Steyr Werke as Austria became Nazified. Pre Anschluss Vienna Proofs look like this:

Shown above is an M1903 (6.5), the 411th proofed at Vienna during 1908.

Yours does have (pre Anschluss) Proof House and 'Nitro' marks, yet seems to lack the Austrian numbering system.

I see no indication of the barrel not being original to receiver.

Shown above is the 'Anschluss Eagle'used during 1938 - 45.

This, however, is the Anschluss era side rail stamping:

Considering the above my initial suspicions are that your rifle was assembled of OWGS produced (pre 1926) parts in 1938 and presented for proof early in the Anschluss period. From examples I have seen on the 'net over the years this would not be as unusual as it may seem.

This is great information why some rifles are marked the way they are. Hopefully it will help me sort out one I have coming in a few weeks.

Rothhammer, I read through that thread and several others, which is why I joined this forum. What you see for Austrian Proof Marks is all that is visible. I learned for other posts that this is a post 1924 but, pre-1926 manufactured receiver. The "OESTERR.WAFFENFABR-GES.STEYR" stamping on the side of the receiver is pre-1926, but looks to have been buffed, like one sees on rifles that have been re-finished. But who knows. What Austrian proofs there are say 38, so post-Anschluss but, pre-German system?

The 38 grains of surplus 4895 is a load that shows promise with the custom 260gr cast bullet I have. I have a large quantity of the Hornady 270gr RN on hand. That is a bullet I shoot out of my custom Santa Barbara Mauser actioned 375 Whelen Improved. I also have on hand the Speer 235gr semi-spitzer bullets to try.

I am part of a hunting club that has a 244 acre lease along the Pea River here in South Alabama. Most of the hogs we shoot are mature boars and sows. Not something this old Iowa farm boy would consider eating. I grew up eating 6 month old corn feed pork. If you have ever been around an old boar the smell is not only on the outside and taints the meat.
