Newly acquired 1910 Mannlicher

I picked this 1910 Mannlicher off of Gunbroker for what I thought was a reasonable figure.

It had some issues with the butt stock having been immersed in water for a period of time.

This caused the buttplate and rear sling swivel to be corroded as well as the original cleaning rod.

Plus the stock has a professionally repaired crack through the wrist.

But despite of all this I took a chance and put the minimum bid and won.

At least clicking on the links shows the pics.
You have some enjoyable restoration ahead, especially on the buttstock but looks to have potential.
Hopefully it repays your efforts. The 1910s are wonderful medium-bore rifles and if this is your first, you are in for a treat.
Two of my friends also have this model and share my appreciation for the 9.5 MS.
Do you intend taking it afield?

I have done a restoration on the stock. I'll post more pictures soon. I have been fire forming brass and working with cast bullets. So far it seems likely that this will be my new feral hog gun to try and reduce the flourishing hog population here in South Alabama. I have a restored Marlin 1893 rifle in 38-55 that I have used in the past.

This 1910 has me a little puzzled. Both the receiver and the barrel are marked with "MADE IN AUSTRIA".

This is like an earlier posted 1910 that had been re-barreled to a 6.5 cartridge. The left of the receiver almost looks like it had been buffed.

The Austrian proofs are for 1938.

Was the rifle returned to Steyr for re-barrel and refinish in 38? Another Austrian proof.

Then sometime after 1954 it was proofed in England.

Now its in the US so it has been around. The serial number at 10880 is fairly high and was definitely made after 1924, but the barrel marking is supposedly used only on separately installed re-barrels not factory installed. Comments?

As I said earlier I managed to remove almost all of the water stain on the butt stock. Here are before and after pictures of the right side of the complete rifle.

I stripped the stock with a furniture stripper several times before using Oxalic acid on two separate occasions to remove probably 95% of the stain. I then used a stain conditioner on the whole stock to get a uniform color followed by a coat of a Provincial oil stain. I then put 6 light coats of TruOil finish and allowed the stock to dry for several days. Then used rubbing compound to take the gloss off and finished with Birchwood Casey Stock Sheen and Conditioner. The metal parts were wire brushed. The butt plate screws and sling swivel were treated with a rust remover while the butt plate itself was sanded with fine sandpaper. They were covered with three coats of Brownell's semi-gloss black Aluma Hyde ll and baked in the oven between coats. I an still considering what to do to the original cleaning rod to preserve and restore it.

Done a fantastic job of the stock mate!
Never knew about Oxalic acid as a bleaching agent or rust removal agent - cheers!
But how does she shoot for the 9.5x56MS?

I have a 260gr cast bullet loaded over 38 grains of surplus 4895 that has been shooting small groups at 50yds that I hope to test out this weekend on some local feral hogs. I know they will work fine if I do my part. I load the 265gr cast RCBS flat nose over 4895 in my Marlin 1893 rifle and have had great success with it on hogs.

As others have said, you now have a very nice 1910. Those are great rifles. I may try your load of 38 gr of 4895. I have used 4320.

Also your M93 Marlin looks like a nice rifle. I have always liked Marlins.

Nice hog. Are you hunting public of private land?
