A nice Lefaucheux shotgun from the attic
      #395191 - 23/12/25 03:48 AM

Gentlemen,
I bought this shotgun by chance when it had just been put online on a sales site. Poorly photographed, poorly described, I risked and was lucky.
It's a big shotgun, massive, marked "Lefaucheux breveté", "10 rue de la bourse à Paris", and "Arquebusier ordinaire de Monseigneur le Duc de Nemours". Dated 1845, rather surprising because at that time one might think that Casimir Lefaucheux manufactured his famous breechloading pinfire shotguns.

It needs a restoration, but I consider it in good condition, I am sure it will become like new again. The real good surprise is that it’s a 10 gauge, which might explain why it’s a Lefaucheux... a special order to go duck hunting?
The Duke of Nemours (1814-1896) is the son of King Louis-Philippe, here he is in 1852:

Note that this address "10 rue de la bourse", will be where Eugène Lefaucheux settled in 1850.
This is what it currently looks like:

I will give you news in a few months, when it has been restored.
I can’t wait to bring him to the hare hunt next year!

so this canardiere its a muzzle loader doublegun? I was looking for the lever to open the action.
no surprise that in 1845 not anyone trust this brand new breech loader. I am not sure Lefaucheux was real out of the test phase with his pinfire cartridges then. all this stuff realy startet with the London world exibition in 1851.
if you go into the records of the london best gunmaker you find muzzler loader ordered well into the 1880s. by old german books the majority of shotguns on a driven hunt in the year 1870 were still muzzle loader.

happy to see this geting a restoration by good hands. a fine double deserves it.

Well done Marc!
I hope the restoration goes well.
Please don't do what the previous owner did & leave this old girl in the attic again!
Can't wait to see the 'after' shots (field results) pun intended

I have an excellent gunsmith on hand, maybe one of the last! But he has a good waiting list, I think it will take six months. I will send you pics at the end.
You will hear from me soon, I plan to have some small pleasures in a little while...

That is a nice shotgun. Agree that it in good condition. The French makers have been a become a bit underrated. They did some beautiful guns. That should be spectacular with a restoration. Look forward to seeing it.
