Don't know if it was Herman's rifle or not but certain is a interesting example of a MS rifle and nicely done at that. Thanks for sharing

""Serial number 25840. Made circa 1938-1943. 6,5 x 54 caliber with an 18" barrel. This is a absolutely fantastic gun in excellent condition. This is a gun that belonged to Nazi Leader Herman Goering. Goering was one of the most powerful men in Germany, second only to Adolf Hitler. In addition to many other posts, he also commanded the Luftwaffe. Goering was one of the few high command Nazis captured. He committed suicide by cyanide after his conviction of war crimes. This is an unusual Steyr Mannlicher Schoenauer as it is spectacularly engraved. On the bottom of the trigger guard is Goering Crest with the raised armored forearm holding a ring. The crest was put on guns made for Goering. This gun also has the interesting feature of having a fold out spike on the forward Mannlicher stock on each side. This spike appears to be a feature where the shooter could stabilize the rifle in a tree while on a hunt. This stock also has an adjustable, spring loaded comb so the shooter could either use the iron sights or the scope. Both of these features are seen on other Goering owned rifles."

Wow that’s something special. Beautifully finished. The stabilising spikes are different.

They are called Kaiserhaken (Kaiser Hooks) allegedly developed for the Kaiser as he was lame in his left arm after a disaster at birth. These hooks were designed to allow him to use a tree as rest to compensate for not having a left arm to support the forend. The hook pivots out of the forend and is gently pushed into the tree on the rear side, the recoil will just pull the spike out of the tree. The steeply curved pistol grip called a Kaisergriff (Kaiser Grip) was also made for one handed shooting for the Kaiser to give more control for his right hand. He also had shotguns which had button triggers on on top of the grip where the safety normally is so the gun could more easily be fired with one hand.

Matt.

We had a Mauser that was built in a similar way.
That rifle had the hooks as well but if I remember correctly they both deployed by a button under the forend. Then you pushed the one you didn’t need back.
This rifle looks to have a latch on each hook which is a better idea I think.
The Mauser had the same adjustable cheek rest too.

It is an interesting rifle but not my cup of tea. The possible previous ownership by Herman Goering doesn't make it any more desirable to me.

Aside from its high-quality workmanship, this rifle will always retain a high value on the collector's market, just like any weapon belonging to a significant historical figure.
