Found a nice MS 1900 in 7x57

Trying to improve on my Mannlicher Schoenauer mdl 1900 I won this one a few days ago. Still in England. Takedown with peep and single trigger.

What's your guess for the purpose of the notch in the left side of the stock just in front of the rear scope mount?
