M-S rifles retailed by other makers and/or dealers
      #394911 - 10/12/25 02:54 PM

Can someone enlighten me. There are examples of M-S rifles retailed by other makers. Some appear to have only the house name engraved on the barrel without any modification and some appear to be stocked in house and show the makers unique embellishments. Are these rifles viewed any differently by collectors and purists or just as one off examples. Certainly some makers would command premium prices but is there a consensus on these rifles. I ask because I am looking at one that was sold by a retailer not a gunmaker but clearly not a typical M-S checkering job. Would M-S build these inhouse to any spec? Any info would be appreciated.

I understand that there were special order MS rifles that have some variations in the stock. I have a 1903 that was made for a detachable comb/cheek piece and the butt is checkered in lieu on the normal steel butt plate.

I understand that many gun manufacturers sold their rifles and shotguns unmarked so the retailer could engrave their name and location and present that they were the manufacturer. If the retailer didn't engrave its name, the gun became a "guild" gun.

I understand the process and historical marketing practices. I am asking if these rifles are viewed differently than factory produced rifles by aficionados of M-S rifles. Rare or no added significance? I am referring to non-factory produced variations, i.e. finished outside of the factory. Bear with me, proof marks in addition to Austrian and/or absent of Austrian proof marks. Did they export barreled actions unproved? I know they would accommodate custom orders. Hope this makes sense. A couple of other quirks I am not able to divulge at this time, but will in due time, sorry.

In my opinion that makes them more desirable if English.

I agree with casper50. However, for the individual, a custom rifle with less a 12 1/2" lop might not have any value, no matter where or when its made.

Since I just closed the deal on this rifle I can share some more details. Retailed by H. Mahallion and engraved on the barrel as such along with some other words I cannot make out or pronounce, Belgium proofs. It does not have 'Made in Austria' roll marked on the receiver ring at all and never did, no witness mark on the barrel for alignment with the action and fitted with a trap butt plate but never drilled for cleaning rod or ammo storage. All original including finishes. So again my question. Are these rifles more sought after or just another variation. Thanks for the previous responses, all info is appreciated.
