The 10.75x68 and it's use in Australia? Or elsewhere?

The 10.75x68 and it's use in Australia?

Following the .404 and comments on its use in the Top End, I'm looking for comments on the use of the 10.75x68 in the Top End, Australia or elsewhere. Historically or in modern times.

Particularly for buffalo.

I've over the years seen a fair few 10,75x67s advertised for sale.

The use of the 10.75x68 is a bit controversial. Some considering it "useless" for big dangerous game. Heavily influenced by the unsuitable 350 gr bullets being two fragile once only being available.

Also with modern powders, what would be the cartridges ballistics using either the normal 350 gr weight projectiles. And 400gr projectiles,

A unicorn I reckon Alby!
Some collector grabbed this piece & handed it down thru the family etc.
As for the price, WAY above what it should be, perhaps a third of what its down for.
Mine you it would be a lovely rifle to get a buff with, Woodies only for this one!

At that price they are playing with themselves, especially as it has double triggers which is something a lot of Mausers in that chambering have. The particular sellers are real wankers and often have guns at moronic prices for sale in some cases for many years.

Here is one at a more reasonable price and with single trigger, however it has also been for sale for months starting originally at $7k.

That's more like the price you should be paying, still a little steep, but it does come with a scope & if you really were after a 10.75 then offer a bit lower!

Some of them are push feed ones. I have handled one .458 Win Mag which stock and action looks very similar.

As Matt says, $20,000 is a walkers price.

Imo $650[ is also ridiculous. For a rifle probably bought at
less than a thousand dollars
.

For a fairly sub standard cartridge chambering.

If it's not cheap why bother with a 10.75x68?

It would actually be a very good cartridge especially with modern bullets. Apart from really big beasts such as Elephant it would take most others quite nicely. A rifle like that Browning is worth about $4k and would be a nice rifle at that price.

Interestingly when that Browning was first listed the seller had it down with some strange hybrid caliber including 404 Jeffery in the name although the barrel clearly shows 10.75x68. I contacted him to help him out with the correct information and he then offered the rifle to me as he recognised that I knew something about it and the cartridge where most others wouldn't. When I told him that it was a nice gun but worth about $4k max and he would have trouble selling at the original $7K he instantly ceased communicating. Looks however that I may have been correct or at least on the right path LOL.

Which is the information I'm looking for. Has anyone, or know of anyone using one for say water buffalo. And the results.

I've no real doubts a 350 gr well constructed bullet will work, most of the time. Looking for real life examples.

Also I wonder how a 400 gr bullet would go, and what speed in a 10.75x68?

Yes.

Old codgers like us, remember these sorts of rifles being bought for say $1,100, not that many years ago.

I reckon such a rifle and scope would sell for US$700 to between $1000 and $1500 in Germany.

The main drag for us is the cost of importing and freight to Australia,

I wonder how many of these 10.75x68s are rechambered to .404?

It looks like all the So offerings are available again.

Lucky some of us have FMJNstocks on hand. To be used sparingly only when needed,

I wonder if the .404 350 gr or thev10.75 347 tr is preferable?

Per wikipedia which most of us are aware of:

Quote:

John "Pondoro" Taylor stated the 10.75×68mm Mauser was undoubtedly one of the most widely used cartridges for hunting in Africa due to its low chamber pressure, the low weight of rifles chambering the cartridge, usually between 7.25–7.5 pounds (3.29–3.40 kg), and the low cost of the early German Mauser rifles. Taylor was very critical of the cartridge due to its poor sectional density and as a result poor penetration. Taylor stated the fully jacketed versions lacked the penetration for frontal headshots on elephant or shoulder shots on buffalo, and the expanding bullets were inadequate on lion and eland.

And ...

Quote:

One prominent user of the 10.75×68mm Mauser was Donald Anderson, son of Kenneth Anderson, who used a rifle chambering this cartridge to hunt almost all Indian dangerous game species and who stated it was far superior to his father's .405 Winchester.[3]

I have no doubt it out performed the .405 Winchester.

Of course too fragile projectiles were accused as the main reason for the cartridge failing historically.

Wikipedia records the following velocities,

Ballistic performance
Bullet mass/type Velocity Energy
347 gr (22 g) SP 2,200 ft/s (670 m/s) 3,830 ft⋅lbf (5,190 J)
347 gr (22 g) SP 2,230 ft/s (680 m/s) 3,870 ft⋅lbf (5,250 J)
347 gr (22 g) SP 2,250 ft/s (690 m/s) 3,900 ft⋅lbf (5,300 J)
Source: Cartridges of the World.[1]

So a 347 gr projectile cat 2,200 to 2,250 fps.

I wonder if these are "old" velocities? Similar to the .404 being quoted as 2,100 to 2,170 fps with a 400 gr?

If modern powders can safely push a 347 gr faster, what could they do with a 400 gr?

If it could drive a 400 gr at between 2,000 fps and 2,200 fps with modern powders, it performs very similar to .408/.411 .450/400 NE rifles, And those while lower powered have been much used double rifle cartridges for all sorts of game.

Should easily make 2,250fps, I would imagine, with a 400gr. suitable projectile. It would take some careful load developement though.

he instantly ceased communicating - this is the common behavior if you telling such daydreamers the truth about their asking price! very common
if you tell them something they are ready to marry you but if you questíoning the price you will be instantly ghosted.
