Churchill 404 Jeffery
      #394880 - 09/12/25 03:43 PM

Here is a Churchill Mauser rifle chambered in 404 Jeffery I picked up a while back. A plain jane working gun that spent its previous life in the NT, Australia. I know very little about the Churchill rifles but was chatting with someone who mentioned that a batch of these rifles turned up here in Australia many years ago, with a number being sold to hunters / guides in the NT for buffalo.

Plenty of pics! Thanks for posting.
Two brothers in our local NT collectors club had one of these each back in the buffalo days, that they never stop telling anyone who'll listen how much they regret selling them!

Very capable and dependable buffalo rifles for getting amongst 'em.

Hopefully that one makes it back up here to have its barrel warmed occasionally...!

Great Hunter to have!
Certainly not a fancy piece, but all function & business when required Chris!
I passed up a Parker Hale in 404 in the early 80's - certainly been kicking myself ever since!

I would bet FN. I have one and itīs quite long. SAKO built .300 H&H and .375 H&H to that same action.
Here is one example: https://www.asetalo.fi/aseet/kaytetyt-as...ava-kayt/11278/

Good working gun there Chris. How do you find that stock with recoil and finding the sights?

There is a few of them floating around here. One is up for sale at the moment. Back in the day you could pick them up for a reasonable price but they attract a bit more now days. I like them. Looking at the one here as it has a scope on it. Interesting to see how much he is going to ask for it.

Clay, not wanting to derail the thread. I'll start a new thread, on the 10.75x68 and it's use in the Territory? If you know of any use. On buffalo especially.

I haven't had a chance to use it as yet but hoping to put together some rounds over Christmas and take it out in the New Year. It seems to shoulder quite well, with the sights aligned quickly (for me anyway)

Chris

Good gun fit is essential in a DG rifle, I would expect.
When eueballing the target/animal, then snapping the rifle you your shoulder, you should be looking at the sights already aligned on the spot you were looking at.
Priceless when that occurs.
