Johann Springer single shot in 9.3x57R
      #394498 - 24/11/25 05:11 AM

Just won this lot in yesterday's Amoskeag auction (Nov 22, 2025). It's an underlever stalking rifle that I'm hoping is in the right 9.3x57R, meaning it's the same as the British 360EX 2.25" round. I've been lucky to find 3 rifles in that round -- a DR by Watson, a DR by GE Lewis and a takedown Alexander Henry single.

Auction Description:
serial #7616, 9.3x57R, 25 1/4” barrel with a mostly bright near excellent bore showing a little sparse oxidation speckling and strong rifling throughout. The barrel of this diminutive Austrian stalking rifle has been cleaned to a pewter gunmetal patina showing some scattered light handling marks and a few areas of mild brown undertones.

The barrel features a solid matted rib and is fitted with period Wiener schnaeppermontage bases and shows Springer markings at rear.

The action and back action lockplate are a similar patina retaining some hints of silvery case-hardening here and there, the trigger plate and pistolgrip cap with some generous wisps of smoky case-hardened colors as well. The action and lockplate retain fine maker markings, the right side with Imperial-Royal Court Supplier marking.

The action is embellished in near full coverage with lovely tight filigree scrollwork. The checkered capped pistolgrip deluxe walnut buttstock and lever release forend rate very fine as lightly cleaned long ago and showing a little older added oil finish with some scattered light dings and handling marks.

The sides of the buttstock exhibit lovely grain figure, there is a nice shadowline left-side cheekpiece and silver monogram plate near the toe. There is a small storage compartment in the butt, the arm is equipped with sling swivels, Jones underlever and sighted with standing v-notch rear sight with single flip-up 250 pace leaf and silver bead front sight. The barrel locks up well and the lock with double set triggers seems to function normally. A nice little stalking rifle from Vienna’s premier gunmaker.

nice catch

I am sorry to say but the chance is high that this 9,3x57R is the 9,3x57R 360 and not the .360 BPE 2,25". what is the difference? on the first view nothing, but, the german versions of the express cartridges follow the form of the original coiled cases more closely than later britisch made cartridges and chambers.
what could be the problem for you?

the coiled case have a chamber with a bigger base than becoming thinner and relativ cylindrical

https://old.municion.org/360/360CoiledBPE2_25.htm

the drawn case is conical and so the chamber is

https://old.municion.org/360/360Drawn.htm

it could be your chamber is not conical but have such a, invisible step. so a case sized with a cylindrical die will not fit into the chamber. its very little but you can't load the cartridge than into the chamber.

iirc, size the case halfway in a 357 mag die will help

Thank you gents. I will certainly update with pics and a chamber cast once in hand.

If this has the chambering with the step, I will either try a partial pass thru 357 dies as you suggest, or wrapping the cases with scotch tape and sizing, like I had to do with my 9.3x72R DR retailed by Weisgerber. That rifle was made before the 1911? standardization of the 9.3x72R and factory brass was too large.

Now the waiting begins.

Chris
