My Westley drop lock heavy arrived today.
      #394461 - 22/11/25 03:52 PM

This was cataloged as a heavy waterfowl gun. In my opinion 1 1/8 oz isn't a heavy load. With the XFull chokes is it possible that it was made as a pigeon gun? Serial looks up to 1909. 12 GA, 2 3/4". S# O9162. Bbl. 30" of fluid steel with 1 1/8 oz. nitro proofs. Steel front and mid bead. Case colored scalloped boxlock action. Double under lug and crossbolt locking with dolls head extension. Sides have gold inlaid markings "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co.". Single selective trigger. Selective ejectors. Automatic safety. Splinter forearm and straight grip stock of fine English walnut with oval escutcheon on toe line. Point pattern hand checkering. LOP: 14 3/8" over an aftermarket Decelerator pad. DAC: 1 3/4". DAH: 2 3/4". Stock has a slight cast off. Bore Diameter: RT: .739, LT: .742. Choke Constriction: RT: .043 (Extra Full), LT: .045 (Extra Full). Minimum Wall Thickness: RT: .035, LT: .022. Weight: 8lbs. 0.4oz. CONDITION: bbls. retain 95% lightly worn blue. Receiver and forearm iron have 90% bright case colors. Floorplate and trigger guard have good blue showing light carry wear. Wood has lightly worn finish showing scratches and marks. Both sides of forearm have small chips along the bbl. channel forward of the iron. Action is tight and on face with top lever sitting slightly right of center. Bores are generally bright showing spots of light pitting

Amazing condition. Looks like it was bought and forgotten about. Very nice shotgun. Tightly choked, could have been a live pigeon gun but looks more like a waterfowler to me.

Considering 1 1/4 ounce "normal" field loads here and 2 3/4" 1 1/2oz. oz. duck & goose loads, both lead of course, the 1 1/8oz. certainly sounds like a weak "heavy" load.
I was under the impression that 1 1/8oz was a "normal" 12 & 16 bore load and 1oz. was a "normal" 20 bore load.
These were "normal" for me in the 1960's, both 12 and 20bore.

The condition is lovely. A desirable gun, even if a week bit tight on the chokes.

Beautiful gun.

I was told that in 1900 England, the 2 1/2" shells proofed at 1 1/8 oz shot were normal upland shells and the 2 3/4" proofed at 1 3/8 oz of shot were considered heavy loads for waterfowl.

That is, one well looked after gun. Very desirable. Let us know how it shoots.

I know very little about shout gun loads, so when they say a heavy waterfowl gun could they be talking about the weight of the gun? I personally doubt it, but it is just a thought.

It looks like nice W-R gold name model. 28-30inch is pretty much standard length in UK for guns used on driven birds. Mid bead and tight chokes...Maybe an inquiry to WR will shed some light.

Normal game shooting shells are usually 28-32 grams for 12 bore, start out in early season with 28 gram 7's and then move to 30 or 32 gram 5's ( about US6) end of season some guns go for 30-32 gram 4's (US5).

20 are usually loaded with 23-25 gram, 28's are considered heavy among some.
