Sidelock or Boxlock

I am about to purchase my first DR and would like any opinions/facts about the differences between boxlocks and sidelocks. Right now I am looking pretty hard at the Searcy's but any other recommendations would be great. Also I understand what ejectors do but what do extractors do?

Sidelock or Boxlock is mainly a personal aesthetic choice. If you want more area for engraving a sidelock provides that. The only real drawback to a true side lock is that it removes some of the strength of the stock right at its weakest point. I say true sidelock because there are some sidelocks that it is merely a plate that looks like a sidelock.

Extractors simply pull the cartridge up out of the chamber for you to physically grab and remove. The Ejectors expel the case from the chamber automatically usually tossing it a few feet from the gun.

Well, A compltely different mechanism with a hell of a lot
more moving parts, all of which have to be exactly the same
- more parts = more time = more money

I would go Boxlock in a DG DR.

Generally SL's have a higher level of engraving so
this also adds to the cost.

FYI, the Holland Dominion sidelock is as strong
as a Boxlock and not all boxlocks are the same
- certain actions - Webley Screw Grip and PHV1 are
(IMHO) the best.

The answer to your question is not as simple as you might think. The short answer is that best quality sidelocks are more expensive than boxlocks of comparable quality mostly due to tradition and, because the market has long been accustomed to this tradition, the market will still bear it.

In true handmade best quality guns, sidelocks do take more bench time to make than boxlocks, but not as much as the price difference often suggests. This is why most of the old-line British makers, who once offered boxlocks as standard fare to fill a market demand, no longer offer them.

So on a boxlock there are fewer moving parts, which equals less parts to malfuntion, so they are more reliable? Is this logic correct when looking for a DG double? I have also read something that said sidelocks are less likely to allow dirt and other crap to get into the action etc. Any validity to this statement?
