George Gibbs Farquharson

UPS dropped this off at my house yesterday. George Gibbs Farquharson Action Sporting Rifle
48 bore proof (nominally .44 / 11mm). 28" barrel length. I did a chamber cast and slugged the bore this morning, and I got lucky. The chamber cast says .450 3 1/4" BPE. That means I don't have to search for .461 Gibb dies and brass, I already load the .450. I can now scratch a Farquharson off my bucket list.

Excellent purchase, Casper. You've been doing quite a bit of your "needed" scratching lately. All appear to have been positive additions for you.
No leade, which is interesting. With BP loads, that means bore sized bullets AFTER patching, & easy loading shot after shot.

Very nice rifle in a great cartridge. It has a really nice stock in particular the forend, which on many of the Gibbs rifles can sometimes be too slim in my opinion. well done.

Matt.

Excellent purchase!
This rifle is in the Gibbs book by Winfer and described there as a 450 3-1/4” which is unusual for a Gibbs.
It’s also #2 of a pair or trio of rifles which the auction house missed entirely for some reason - the big ‘2’ on the top strap being a clue…
I really wanted this rifle and I bet I was the last bidder before you but I’m tight these days so I’m glad it went to a fellow NitroExpress member!

Thanks for the info Huvius. I saw the "2" when I went over it but I've never seen a pair of these before. Sorry but not sorry. lol I saw the write up it Winfer's book. What is a "detachable action"?

The detachable action is how the trigger, hammer and block are integral with the bottom metal/trigger guard.
It all pivots out as one unit once the lever pivot screw is removed.
Page 96 in the same book shows a good photo of that.

As discussed above, your bullet will be right at .450” to fit the chamber. That is pretty common on Gibbs rifles and others of the era I suppose - for example, my 461 will not allow a bullet larger than .461”.
Or, perhaps, measure a fired case and go for the bullet that is a good slip fit into the case. I’ve done this with a couple rifles and, as they are single shots, the somewhat loose fit is no worry. Makes reloading a breeze too since no dies are required!
From the photo of the caliper above I assume that is a groove of .459”, correct?
What that means generally is that your best accuracy will be in using real black powder and a cast greased or paper patched bullet on the softer side to “bump up” to the rifling.
I’m sure with your experience you already know all this but it doesn’t hurt going over it again for newcomers to get their heads around how these great rifles work.
